Diesel time

Diesel time
Folks,
looks like i will be heading towards a diesel as 500 miles a week in the scoob is costly and a little tiring.
I have looked at an E39 525DSE on a Y 90k for £8k and have also developed an interest in Saab 9-3 Tid SE on 02 plates for about the same or less, usually with less miles.
I reckon the BMW will be a nicer drive and keep my interest but the Saab easier to live with in terms of servicing etc and would have less miles.
Anyone got any direct experience of either? i know i should be able to get 45mpg from either on a run whereas WRX is getting 28mpg.
cheers

The BMW is the best chasis of them all - you should enjoy owning that
I went for an Audi A6 though when considering a large diesel saloon. Seemed better value than a BMW [althought the Audi is now forsale ]

Passat PD130 Sport -- 6 speed box, extra torque, all the toys. Getting quite cheap now that they are the "old" shape.
Very big & roomy, handling is, er, safe but pokey and I get 45mpg average and 50+ on a run.
The old 525d is a bit slow, only had a short spin in one but you might prefer a more modern jobby

I have a e39 525d sport.....superb car, often overshadowed by the 530d, but IMHO a great car. Drives very well, has plenty of power on the motorway, and eceonomy is reasonable...Im getting about 33mpg around town and about 45mpg on a motorway run (600 miles on a tank!!). Try and get a sport if you can as they look much nicer, not grandad like the se spec.....
Also go for the usual aircon/leather etc
My ONLY gripe with the 525d is that it can be a little sluggish until 2000rpm when the turbo starts to come in..having said that remaps are very cheap, around £200-250 and take them to power/torque figures that exceed the 530d...I will get mine remapped soon, as Ive heard loads of people rave on about ehm on www.bmwland.co.uk
PM me if you have any specific qs!
