Default Mondeo V6

My wife and I are considering a V6 Mondeo (as an additional car), probably in the £1.5k-2.5k price bracket, and I wondered if there are current/ex owners here who can offer advice?

Cheers

Best to ask on here, http://www.fordmondeo.org/

There are a few issues that I'm aware of though which might also help you when haggling.

1) Check to see if the car still has a water pump with a plastic impellor as these do fail after a while which can lead to overheating of the engine. It's possible to buy and fit a new water pump with a metal impellor. (mondeo forum will tell you how to tell what type it is)

2) Check to see if the brake pipes that go over the fuel tank inside the right rear wheel arch have been replaced. These do corrode very badly and have led to brake failure on many mondeo's.

3) When test driving the car, drive over some man hole covers and bumps in the road and listen out for a mechanical clunking noise. This noise will mostly likey be a broken spring which because they tend to snap right at the top or bottom are very difficult to see unless the car is jacked up and the wheel removed.

I'm thinking of offloading my old 1.8 Mondeo and getting an MK2 V6. I've seen quite a few for sale with h/g problems, but I don't know if they're linked to the water pump problem or are a seperate issue (if they're an issue at all).

As the pround owner of a MK2 2.5 Si with a failing HG I can offer some advice.

Great to drive, wonderful noise & reliability OK
MPG not great (25-30) but mine needs a service.

Check the Mondeo forum they have a V6 section which covers a number of the unique design features of the V6 lump.

I bought one of these thinking it had to be bullet proof. Its only now that I've read they are not.

As with the above posts, when checking/test driving make sure the inlet valve/tract opens at about 4k rpm, you should feel "like" the cams have changed. If not then the controllers connections have come loose and need soldering.

The HG problem is caused by a plastic!!!! water pump failing, steer clear of any car that has not had this replaced. Mines covered 90k and has been failing for a little while and caused the head gasket to fail. Its not uncommon to warp the heads and this is big bucks.

Some of the eletrics are also crap, the main loom runs down the side of the car and is prone to corrosion at the multi joints, on mine the alarm has stopped working. You can also have problems with the remote central locking again the forum has a step by step to diagnosis the issues here.

Hope this helps

i bought an st24 last year 1st thing i did was to change the water pump
for a metal one , £35 new from ebay. then the mods started. a k&n induction kit ,st200 throttle body, miltec decat & a superchip blue fin. the difference this has made is amazing, the car really does go
use it as a runabout to go shopping, its not too bad on fuel if you take it easy & no one looks twice at it in the car parks (unlike the scoob )
it's a my2000 , 1 owner,ffsh,46k paid £3200 & it's mint
the only prob i've had is the air con not working i think it just needs regassing .

I was given one last winter by my in-laws. Much appreciated, as at the time we had one car and my motorbike.

It had done about 90k mway miles, and was the Ghia X with all the toys - R Reg.

Even though it was free, I thought it was bloody crap tbh. So slow and wallowy, and every toy seemed to be on its way out - central display off/on, passenger heated seat stayed on permanently if you turned it on. Central locking only locked drivers door from drivers side.

I couldn't complain as I only had to tax/insure it but I wasn't impressed.

Brother's got a "R" reg V6 Ghia X estate. Been around the world a couple of times with well over 100K on the clock.
Tow's his Escort MK1 rally car up and down the country. Rarely misses a beat.

Did have the water pump fail, and a wheel bearing go about a rear ago, but that was about it in goodness knows how many years.
Never uses any oil / water !

Only issue he's had was replacing the plugs is a sod, especially those under the bulkhead !

Mine is for sale, as we're downsizing to 1 car. May be a bit pricey though, it's had a full engine rebuild with £3.5k of head work (217bhp).
There was a thread recently discussing the ST24, might be with a search. Pretty highly regarded. Handle well, and quite quick.
Mine has the ST200 wheel and brakes too, which improve things a bit.
I'd certainly recommend one, just can't justify keeping a second car I hardly ever use.

I had a '98 2.5V6 Si estate.
I had it for 2 years or so and it was a great car. One of the best 'all round' cars I've had to date.

I ran a nearly new V6 Mondeo for a year but as it was less than a year old and low milage I can't comment on reliabilty but can vouch for the guys over on www.fordmondeo.org

On a run mid 30's mpg was easy and economy wasn't bad for a V6. Performance was good but not in any way in performance car legue but plenty of power for dialy driving.
The engine is silky smooth and the Mondeo's handling is fluid with plenty of feel.
If you can push the budget a Mk3 Mondeo is a major step up in refinement, handling and build quality. Its bigger and heavier so a little slower and slightly more thirsty but cheaper insurance and well worth the extra IMO.

Cheers

I ran a Mk2 V6Si for about 5 years and then a Mk3 V6 Ghia X for nearly 2 years. My Mk2 started to exhbit signs of a bottom end knock at about 50K miles.

All round it was a good car, not fast, handles OK (Si is much better than Ghia X as it has slightly stiifer suspension) but I woulodn't buy another due to the many, many engine failures you can read about on the mondeo owners web site.
