I'm about to change the wheels and tyres on my Golf and need a second opinion!

Its a mk4 3 door Golf GTTDi 150 in black and running on the standard 16" VW Montreals.

So its a choice between the new 18" Audi RS4 style and the old 18" RS4 style.

In my opinion I recon you get the old style ones. Think they suit the car better. they are more chunky like the golf.

I'd personally go for the Santa Monica's - okay 17" not 18 but I personally think the best looking of the standard VW wheels...

Probably go for the Audi RS4 wheels myself... you don't see many cars running those obviously whereas with the other style they are all over the place.

On a MK 4 i'd go with the old style, cos they're the right age wheels for the car, a MK5 then i'd go for the new ones....

i ended up taking my 19" RS4 replicas off my golf gt tdi and fitted the standard 16" montreals back on it, everyone seems to have the RS4 wheels on golfs these days

i had some 18" RS4 reps fitted to my Golf - beware of certain reps as they bend easily
i ended up changing to genuine TT comps which i got bored with so swapped to 17" S3 alloys which gave a better ride and looked a lot better

RS4 reps are tacky in the extreme. They are also usually of crap quality and as we all know even the originals bend easily. 18" wheels will destroy what little compliance the MKIV chassis offers as well and destroy the handling.

A better choice would be TT wheels with VW centres or stick with the OEM look and go for some BBS CH's or even a set of EVOLO wheels.

Personally I don't like the RS8 wheel, and think they look OTT.

Although it would be boring if all the Golfs were the same.

I'm looking at swapping my 18" RS4 wheels for some 17" wheel of some sort.

A mate of mine had BMW M3 wheels on his - looked good. Otherwise I prefer the older of the two Audi wheels.

yes with the A8 rims its fookin beautiful but too many people have em these days. Go with the new RS4's they look the mutts nuts on evry car ive seen with them ie new TT, a4's, S3's etc. However you will have some trouble getting them to fit with a drop on your motor.

I think the 18" wheels are killing the acceleration.

I still have the Forester, although I pop along to this months meet in the Golf!

18 inch wheels also destroy the chassis's limited ability to deal with poor road surfaces. All these muppets you see driving round with 18 and 19's care more about *bling* than the driving experience.
My car was bought with F1's/18 inch CH's on it (225/40/18) and they were appalling, car tramlined, had very poor compliance and terrible NVH. Replaced with a set of f1/17's in 225/45/17 and the car was a lot better. My car had the lowered Bilsteins from the anniversary model on it as well. A lot of people just whack huge rims on their car without even bothering to lower them and end up with something that handles/rides like crap and looks stupid to boot.

Yeah cos M3 drivers don't care about the driving experience eh? Oh no wait a minute, some of the best "driving experience cars" cars come with these sizes as standard/optional

Your old favourite, the X5 with 22" chrome spinners could be described as bling Rabid but hardly a Golf with RS4's

I hate to say it, but I agree with Rabid.

I bought the Golf as you see it in the pictures and I thought it was brilliant that it had 18" wheels. The ride is a little harsh on anything other than motorway and smooth A-roads. Although the TDI 150 has VW "sports" suspension, it's very choppy/crashy on bumpy roads, and there is a tendancy to tramline (although not as noticeable as on my old Imprezas)

Not so bad when I lived in a big town, but as we are more in the sticks, there are more country lanes and pot holes that need to be tackled on a daily basis!!

I've got my eyes on either a set of S3 or TT wheels! Something a little boring for most Golf owners, but it will be less spokes to clean!

The point is, moron, that 18" wheels wreck what little chassis composure the MKIV has. A car like an M3 was designed for such wheels.

I agree that 'some of the best driving experience cars' come with these sizes as standard and optional. Indeed the 330ci I used to have had 255/35/18's at the rear and that car managed to somehow deliver fantastic ride quality even on those tyres.

The point is that by putting 18 or bigger rims on the MKIV you ruin what little good it had going for it.

I thought I'd spelled that out loud and clear but obviously some people need the point driving home extra hard.

The TT alloys or S3 Avus are an excellent choice Andy, I'd advise budgeting for a set of F1's to go with them if you can. The Pilot Sports are OK but nothing more.

I did find it strange when I saw the Anniversary came standard with 18" wheels. I suspect the suspension changes could cope, but the "normal" suspension would struggle.

The wheels I'm looking at have Pirelli P6000 tyres, but I think Goodyear F1 tyres are pretty good for most cars

My car had been modded by the previous owner with full Anniversary suspension and brake setup as well as a set of 18" CH's (same as anniversary).
It rode and handled better on the 17's I put on it so I reckon all round 18's are bad new on the MKIV chassis. That said I drove a Leon Cupra R on 18's and that was much better so it must be possible to get decent performance out of a set of 18's on that chassis.

Don't be a moron then, retard, try reading and responding to what people have actually written rather than launching into some crass bull**** about what people with 'decent' cars have fitted. That way we can all stay nice and polite.
Otherwise expect to be slapped down like the backwards child you sound like.

Anything bigger than 17's on a MKIV Golf is counterproductive other than cosmetically.
