Default Golf TDi 4Motion vs Tdi normal

Hi,

I'm looking to buy one of the newer shape Golf TDi with 140 bhp, they are nice to drive. Unfortunatley as with all VW Golfs they seem to sell pretty quick. I've seen the 4motion version of the TDi for sale and doesn't effect my insurance much so I'm considering going for one.

Performance specs on both these cars are exactly the same according to VW (bar emissions and mpg). Had anyone driven both to be able to offer a useful comparison?

Thanks

It's not a direct comparison but it may help. I have a Passat sport PD130, and my bro-in-law had an Audi A4 130 quattro. Same engine, pretty much same gearing.

His A4 felt a lot blunter than my Passat, which has always had really sharp throttle response. The A4 just didn't take off in the gears like mine, and his economy was quite a bit worse too (only just 40mpg for him versus 45 - 50mpg for mine).

For my money the 4wd just didn't offer anything useful.

Ah but the A4 has proper quattro permanent 4 wheel drive, this may explain the difference in economy figures. The Golf uses the Haldex system which is only part time 4 wheel drive.

The guys on the Mk5 forum on www.uk-mkivs.net should be able to help you out. Personally I wouldn`t get the 4 Motion unless you live in an area where the winters are severe enough to need it, but there you go.
