Default Selling a car privately

Wonder if anyone on here can reassure me..

Now Im used to selling/buying all my cars privately, but recently advertised my
Golf PD 150 on Pistonheads and on here. The cars had the usual interest via emails which
never comes to much (will you swap for this etc etc), but has had serious
interest (phone calls etc) from 2 seperate buyers over in Ireland.

One of which has just sent over a £200 deposit via Paypal (he offered bank
transfer too), and plans to fly over to my local airport next week with cash.

As far as I can see as he is bringing cash, and I intend to bank it before releasing
the car, nothing can go wrong... or can it???

Thanks in advance

Chris

Christ, I suggest you arrange to meet him at the branch of the bank you intend to pay the cash in to. That way he can feel safe with the fact he's meeting you in a bank and you can be assured that as soon as that cashier has counted and verified the notes and stamped your paying in receipt that you can have some peace of mind in terms of handing the car and V5 over.

I have done this a couple of times and found it works well

Sounds like a plan. At the very least I'd want to know the notes were genuine, it could be easy to fool us with fake Irish banknotes...

Bit of an update..

Turns out the guy can only travel on Saturday, as stated I have a deposit
and he is bringing the rest (a considerable amount of money!) in the form
of a bankers draft.

I have a copy of the draft and was going to phone his branch tomorrow who
should tell me its been issued.

Question is, if they say it has been issued is this good enough??

Any help would be really appreciated, I dont like to mess the guy around
as he has shelled out for HPI checks, flights, ferrys etc... on the other
hand cant afford to lose the money...

What do you think?

Does your bank open on Saturday?

If not I would insist he took a day off and came in the week.

He prob is genuine, but as you say its a large amount of money and I wouldnt want to learn the hard way

Get the number YOURSELF from the phone book, not his mates number he could give you.

Ask him to bring ID, including driving licence and or other similair photo ID, utility bills, passport and also take a picture of him on the day.

At the end of the day it's a two way road and if he is genuine he will have no problems with you asking to prove who he is and certainly won't mind you taking his picture.

He may well expect the same from you which shouldn't be a problem I presume.

Cheers for the advice everyone, Im calling his bank later to confirm the draft has been issued, which Im sure it has. But whats to stop him cancelling the draft just before the banks close on Friday and then bringing a copy? Would cash be better?

Am I being too paranoid?!

Thanks again for any advice

I sold my last car to a lad in Ireland - he flew over to Liverpool, but turned up with Bank of Ireland notes, and I had no idea about them

So I took them to a nearby building society that was open (Saturday) and they verified the cash for me.

Bank Drafts can be stolen, you are right to verify it has been genuinely issued.

Any concerns, them tell him to wait........you don't wanna make a mistake with this for the sake of his convenience.

My last sale was done via electronic transfer with the buyer trusting that I would release the car once my bank had confirmed receipt of funds. I was lucky though because I could verify the identity of the purchaser's family through a friend of mine.

Good Luck

No need for cash or bank drafts these days ... transfer of funds between banks is the way to go. I've done this over the last few years & transfer is instant ie make the call & cash is moved over.

BD's can be stolen as noted above, don't risk it.
