Default new shape beetle

Just been to look at a w reg vw beetle. 48000 miles, black.
its for the girlfriend and dont really know much about them. Actually looks quite smart and in good condition. its up for £6500 which seams reasonable so just wondered if theres a reason they are quite cheap and if theres any thing to look out for.

cheers leon

Many people consider them to be hairdressers' cars therefore that image may account for prices.

As far as I know, they are basically a VW Golf in drag so there is probably nothing to look out for that you wouldn't look for on a Golf.

Is it right hand drive? W reg suggests 1999/2000 so it's quite an early one and the earliest were all LHD. Again, as far as I know, they were/are built in either USA or Mexico - neither of which have great reputations for build quality or building RHD cars.

Have a look at www.parkers.co.uk

Assuming it's a 1.6 that she's looking at, the price that you are looking at doesn't seem cheap.

Wife had a 2.0 Beetle so would think the 1.6 would be underpowered. Lots of small niggles with hers such as window motors. She loved the car but I sold it after a year as could see some money having to be spent on it.

My sister used to own one a 2.0 in black on a w plate.

Anyway I drove it a fair bit. It looked pretty smart and was a reasonably nice car - bit on the soft side in the handling department.

Main prob with it was practicality. Other than that and few electrical probs and usual VW servicing issues was pretty okay.

Put a decent set of alloys on and drop the ride height and they look pretty good too IMHO
