Apart from its thirst make sure all suspension works correctly, make sure it raises itself fairly quickly after bein dropped to its lowest position. The air pumps wear out about every 60k and there about £300.
Make sure all the aircon and heater works correctly.Mixer motors on the heater unit behind the dashboard go faulty a lot.As do the seals on the heater matrix...Both "nice" jobs as you can imagine!!
Make sure the thing runs 100% and has no flashing warnings in the display..
They also do a lot of suspension bushes and joints,so they all need checking for play..
Oh..Catalysts have a habit of blocking on the 4.6 as well..
just make sure EVERYTHING works..
HTH...

Cripes where do I start.
Porous engine blocks, leaky head gaskets, camshaft wear, tappet wear, blown MAF sensors on cheap/old LPG converted engines, disintergrating catalysts. Autoboxes that burn out clutch packs or get stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Suspension that rides on the bumpstops. Windows that won't wind up (or down), ventilation that doesn't vent and various other niggly electric gremlins. Corrosion of Alminium bodywork and bubbling paint. Wear on suspension bushes, trailing arms, A-frame, steering linkage.......
Other than that. Great Just get one that's had the money already spent on it rather than buying one that's ran into the ground

If ya need a 4x4 buy a 2.8 shogun,Pretty bombproof IMHO..
Landcruisers are generally classed as the best, but they can have some expensive problems..Done quite a few heads and autoboxes, what happens is that the radiator gives out, this blows all the oil from auto cooler into the water and visa versa.
So oil in the box causes the brake lock up bands to become unstuck, lack of water in the engine causes head hotspots and cracks!
Just a word or 2 of warning!! LOL...

P38 Factory Recalls
2000 V8 petrol engines idler puller premature failure.
2001 V8 petrol engines gearbox breather pipe routing.
The 1996 4.6 HSE and 2000 Vogue models my Mum has owned have been OK (ish) but not as reliable as some of the Japanese marques he friends enjoy.
The ride quality on the 18" Hurricane alloys is unacceptable.
Recently electrics (climate control/key fobs/seats) have started to play up.
And of course, the usual Land Rover panel gaps.....

My mate is in a Landrover Club and used to work at a LandRover main dealers in Manchester. He now works for an independent Land Rover Garage in the North West. I was also at this crossroads with a Vogue SE last year but after the nightmare stories he told me I was S...T...R...O....N....G....L.....Y! advised to buy a 4WD which would actually start in the morning, and wouldnt need to keep remortgaging to keep on the road!!! Hence the Scoob!! Ok you cant see down girlies tops from the lower vantage point but they generally take their tops off for you when youre in a scoob anyway!! Well the classy northern ones that is !!
He also drives a Defender ! if you were wondering!!

Ive got a P38 1996 4.6 HSE, there great cras. as long as its had good serfvicing on a regular basis any problems would now have been sorted. They are pricy on fuel though. I get 8-10 MPG round town and about 19MPG on the motorway. But for the money you cant buy a more luxury and capable car.
I just wish i bourght one with LPG as 50 pence a mile round town hurts after a while. Or if you dont a fast car get the DHSE, but the 4.6 goes like a stabbed rat for a 2.7ton tank
