renault-sport clio
I went to my local renault dealership yesterday checking out a few used approved 172/182 clio's,and during a chat with the salesman he told me the 172/182 clio's have to be run on 98ron super-unleaded,is this true?

I pretty much always use optimax. Don`t really think it makes a huge difference in peformance but defo better fuel economy on opti.

Ran my 172 on SUL (for the 2years I had it) usually Optimax but it seemed to quite like Sainsbury's SUL..FWIW
It makes me laugh that people pay a premium to buy a 'sporty' performance orientated car and quibble about putting a performance fuel in it because it's going to cost them £1 a week more..! (in actual fact very often it doesnt cost you any more as you end up with better MPG..!)
Why not go the whole hog and buy a CHEAP 1.4 lean burn that is designed to run on 95ron and also save a lot on insurance..??!!

I've used 95 and 97/98 RON fuel in my girlfriends 52 plate Cup and to be honest, I havent noticed any difference whatsoever. As for money saving... depends where you fill up... theres a motorway services on the M61 that charges 106ppl on Ultimate, dont care what anyone says about premium for sports car blah blah... I aint paying that for some petrol... its not the cost, its the principle

Cheers for the feedback people-it's only that my nearest optimax pump is quiet a distance away from home, and bp is basically opposite my house. So bp 97ron sul should be fine then

The thing that most people fail to take into account is that just filling up with a tank of 97/98 isn't going to suddenly make a difference if your last tankful was 95ron..!
Unless you reset the ECU (and be honest who does that..?) it will take at least 2 to 3 tankfuls of 97/98 for the ECU to advance the ignition to give the increased performance. Remember most ECU's pull timing very quickly (ie 95ron) but take a long time to advance..!
If you buy any fuel at motorway services you're going to pay silly prices (how much was 95ron at this particular PFS..?) however, at most garages the difference in price between NUL (95) and SUL (97/98) is around 4/5p per litre or ~£2 per £40 tankful..! Not much really is it..?

Performance and cost issues a side, its still ok to put 95ron in, its not going to kill it.
Just to point out though, I generally do put 97/98 ron fuel in, and I still hold out that I cant notice a difference in performance.

The only way I noticed a difference was 'if' I put 95 in (instead of the usual 97/98) as within a few miles the car was less resposive/urgent. The imporvement was less noticable as it happens over a much longer time. As per my comments previously..
BTW the 172 and my scoob state 'only use 98ron' inside filler cap..!

I had a 172 cup (great car, and far superior to the 182 IMO), and in the 2 yrs I had it, I only occasionally ran it on 98RON. I would not bother to be honest, unless you are planning on giving it serious stick.

Yeah, to be fair I agree with your comments (and I only put Optimax in my Scoob) but he did only ask if you have to put 98 in the car. Answer to that: no
Is it better to: yes

I use normal in mine but fill up with Optimax a tank before a track day.
I can't feel any difference and to be quite honest, unless you cover the same road distances at the same speeds you can't compare the mpg of the two fuels.
It does make me feel better though
