Fiesta engine trouble - what could it be?
The Mrs 1995 1.1 Fiesta has got issues (apart from it being a Ford ) It starts first time but then stalls within 10 seconds if left without touching the accelerator. If you touch the accelerator it dies immediately any pressure is applied to it no matter how lightly you touch it.
Is is carbs? Is it a fuel line blockage? Filters blocked? its not flooding as will continually start after each time it stalls. It hasn't been serviced in god knows how long so probably a result of this, in fact could it be the air filter causing this?
Where do I start in trying to fix it myself as can't drive it anywhere to a garage to get it fixed. Do have AA cover but don't want to use it just yet as had to use it a couple of times already and will end up with no more call outs left soon

OK one thing I forgot to mention is that I am totally incapable of touching anything under the bonnet I am hedging my bets its the air filter thats blocked and so the carbs are getting fuel but no air as the car has been recently juddering when driving and l am now thinking this is due to a blocked air filter? Does that sound right?
Now the problem is where the hell is the air filter under the bonnet of a Fiesta?
Don't think its the choke as its not revving any differently, its just like it runs out of petrol after about 10 seconds so would this be where its got no air to burn with the petrol?

Sounds like a problem with the air/fuel mix.
Which doesn't tell you where the problem lies. Could be ECU, Air Filer etc etc.
First thing I would check is the air filter and all the hoses that are connected to the pipe that connected the air box to the inlet manifold.
Does the fiesta have an idle stabilisation or idle control valve? Could be this is clogged up and sticking (needs removed and cleaned out with carb cleaner).
Loose or split hoses would be my first check, might need to remove the air box to get at them to check depending on the layout.

Thanks Richard.
Andy its not been serviced for a number of reasons, one is the low number of miles its doing. The reason for asking is so I might learn how to check some basic things and learn something so I know where things are in future
Will google to double check the air box is actually the bit I think it is (the big grey circular bit that is sitting on the top of the engine with a rectangular bit sticking out the side of it that points towards the front of the engine by the radiator - assuming this is where the air goes in) before I go removing parts from the engine!

bob, check the all the pipes from the top of the air filter box
you sometimes get white elumsified oil blocking them.
its a CFI engine, so shouldn't be any prob with mixture, although a blocked breather will **** things up.
squirt some carb cleaner down the intake, under the airfilter cover, or better still, neat redex!!, while giving it a rev.
same thing happened to my old fiesta.

Thanks for the replies guys. Turns out its a problem with the fueling system and has gone totally up the swanny now where its intermittently choosing when to start and when to play dead. Problem is the Ford garage want £91 just to stick it on their computer diagnostics which is not worth it.
Anyone know if there are other garages that have these diagnostic systems that don't charge main dealership prices, ie that £91 is for an hours labour ffs.
Also do the AA etc have the diagnostic systems as I could get them to come and check it and then I would get the answer for free but don't want to use a call out if they wont have the right equipment to check.
Basically my local garage has said it needs the diagnostics to pin point which component is duff as replacing parts could be an expensive job without knowing which bit is dead, trial and error is not an option.

Had a running problem with our M-reg Festa which seemed like a fuel problem - periods of hesitancy, jerkiness etc.
Took it to the local independent who are normally spot on and they couldn't find the problem. They sent it to the local Ford Dealer, who diagnostic'd it and found a worn out Throttle Position Sensor. £95 later (£70-odd for the TPS and £20 for the diagnostic) and it was sorted....

Cheers for that. The problem with our one is that the fuel inlet is staying closed apparently. To get it started the garage took the electrical block off the top of the injector which forces it open, got it started and then put the connector back on the top of it and it carries on running. To do this though have to take the top off the air box and fiddle about with it and then put it back together plus it takes two people, one to rev the nuts off it while starting it and the other to do the injector fiddling.

2 common problems come to mind.
Faulty TPS. If it has a red TPS, it is most likely faulty. There is an updated part available.
CTS circuit fault. Rather than fitting a new ECU, fit a 42K resistor over the CTS. This reduces the over-fuelling when cold.
Most auto electricians will be aware of these faults.
Don't forget to pull the KAM fuse for a few minutes after any changes.

Nope not that as fuel is getting to the carb/injector fine as undoing and pressing the throttle fuel shoots out lol. Just been out and looked again. The car starts first time if it hasn't been turned over for say a couple of hours. If you start it and then stop it and then try and start it again it wont fire up. Has to be left for several hours untouched and then it will start again.
Had a look round the throttle body under the airbox and found several litlle black boxes and one white box more at the back so not sure which one of these house the TPS?
