Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO
Has anyone got any info on the above car ?
My mate is looking at buying one and we are going to look at one tonight.
What sort of things should we be looking for ? apart from the usual checks, service book, hpi check, etc etc . . .
Any common problems with them ? ie weak turbo's, suspension, gears, etc . .
Is there a recommended place in the stockport area to take these for services and checks ? Will prosport do them ?
Thanks in advance......

morning mate
they can be trouble so check for the usual stuff, i had one - biggest mistake i have made with buying cars.
they are nice and powerfull though.
Check the ECU's if i remember rightly there are 2 and one under passanger seat i believe is a weak point with heat, also if its been modified be carfeull with BOV's they have been known to cause idle problems and when backing of can cause engine to stall, check the electrics work, ie thefront and rear electric splitters and spoiler the front is a weak point and replacement mechanism is around 300 quid if you can find a second hand unit.
also air filter problems similar to scoobs playing havoc with the maf, on those they really need high quality after market bits.
they are a good looking motor and hope its a genuine example you are looking at because they are gorgeous cars

Also, be aware that 3000gt / gto's suffer from transfer box issues. The drive shaft from the transfer box (they are 4WD) has very weak splines on them, and if they have been driven hard, can be ripped off.
This is big cash if this goes wrong.
This is a very common weak link. Check out the forum for other issues.

Hope this helps.

Would not a Supra be a better bet paul?
A mates mate had one and it cost him a fortune to run - ended up spending thousands on it.
who is it BTW?

I originally looked at a 3000gt, r plate, but ended up buying a facelift, JDM '97 twin turbo supra.
Far better reliablity, auto, faster.
Still, I wouldnt be upset if I saw a r plate 3000gt on my drive either.

I think the replies just about answer your question Paul - thing is i've looked them upo and they are a heavy old bloater and certainly no faster than lightly modded Scoob.
As mentioned earlier - surely a 300ZX or a Supra TT woudl be a better bet

Ive done loads of 3000 GT's.I used to work at a Mitzy dealer where i was the ralliart technician..
3000 GT's are very reliable on the whole..They do need to be looked after, and they can have gearbox/transfer box issues if badly driven or if the power has been increased.Generally there fine for around 400bhp,after that, its a wing and a prayer.
An import GTO with no history is a quick way to bankruptcy,i certainly wouldnt entertain a rough one for any kind of money..But things like clutches, cambelts and brakes aint out of the world on price,in fact i would say reasonable.
And lets have it right,a good one looks awesome..Gillp...were pretty close to Stockport,so if your man does decide to get it,i can sort out the bits he may want doing at reasonable money..
cheers

Thanks all for the replies.
I have forwarded on the link to my mate for him to look at all this.
I'm sticking with my scoob, theres no way I'd exchange it for a GTO. They sound too much like trouble.
Thanks for the offer fatscoobyfella.
