330d Turbo failure
Chap at work runs a MY02 BMW 330d Sport saloon. He has covered around 62k and it has had it's fair share of niggles including a 'funny noise' coming from the engine area. It has had new turbo bolts and manifold under warranty, but today it decided it didn't think alot to the turbo
He is still waiting full diagnosis, but he has been loaned a 116i SE <maybe and he likes it a lot!!!!!!
I have always liked the look, but the price for me has been it's downfall.

£17k I think this one should be. You don't get a lot, but residuals will be good, and the fit and finish is better than the Alfa 147 I had a month ago.

Andy,
I had the plastic inlet manifold crack on one of mine. That was a common fault. On another 330d I had one of the butterflies in the inlet manifold break away. This butterfly and the springs assosciated with it then introduced themselves to #5 piston. Result was 24 valves, 1 head, 1 piston and about 2 weeks in a loaner! Still, the car was under warranty, so that was OK.
They can be tempremental, but I've never had a turbo go pop. Maybe I baby it too much! LOL
BTW, 1 series is a grower. That one needs bigger wheels though, as do most BM's.
Cheers
Matt

I told them that they shouldn't make their engines out of old milk cartons, they split the repair bill 50:50

To be honest, BMW turbos didn't exactly have the greatest reliability record when I worked for them, but then all German vehicles seem to be running on a perceived reliabilty platform that was from many years ago. I should know, I've worked for BMW, am now back at Mercedes and my friend works for VW, and we are both doing more warranty repairs than ever in this modern day and age.

Both mines havent had a single thing done to them mechanically.
Though some ***** damaged my rear bumper a couple of weeks ago on the 535d, put it in next day, got it back a few days later as good as new. Was offered a 525d as a courtesy but i just used the Cab for a few days.

Needless to say, he is on the hunt for a new motor !

He has now fallen out with the 116i. I think it left him high and dry when he tried to overtake someone on a country lane this morning. He was still cursing it when he came into work - lol.

LOL. Let's hope his 330d is on the mend soon. I'd imagine that the 116i has about 40% of the grunt of the 330d, so unless he's overtaking on a long downhill stretch with a following wind, it's going to be a risky manoeuvre!

Cars back and runs sweet as a nut !
When the dealer was probed about the 'shot rear discs and pads', and '4 buckled wheels' it turned out that the brakes need doing this year, and the wheels are fractionally buckled, and said Kwick Fit wouldn't notice !
Bloody dealers, you can't trust their word half the time !
I will update with any further info

The steering on mine is the heaviest assisted set up I've driven.
What are you used to by comparison?

UPDATE !!
The car ran for about 7 days before the clutch gave up and started slipping . he is nursing it around for now, but it is going back to the dealers next week. So yesterday he was sat at some traffic lights when he saw a Toyota Corolla coming up behind him, the driver appeared to be having some sort of fit. As the Toyota hit the back of the BMW, it confirmed his suspicions
The car was resting on the back of the BMW and the driver was unconscious. The bus driver following got out to assist and as he opened the door of the Toyota the guy came round and coughed a load of **** all of the bus driver, and dumped the clutch at the same time further ramming the BMW before it stalled.
The BMW doesn’t look too bad, but it is having a rough time at the moment. The dealer has been kept busy anyway.
