£5k. Need a 'toy'
Hello all.
I'm after a wee something as a second car with a budget of £5k.
Initial thoughts are:
Saff Cossie
Classic Impreza
Supra
Mitsi GTO TT
As you may have guessed, it has to be turbo.
Cheers!

think you are right about the GTO, it's lot of car.
However, always an option if i can find a good un. do all the later models have LSD's?

Well yes, but aren't they an absolute bitch to maintain? I heard that the engine has to come out to do a clutch!
Can you show me a pic of a rev3? I can't tell the diff, also what are the differences?
Also thought about a supra.... but not sure
Decisions.....

Saff Cossie - Yes, yes, yes! Total classic and a minter still looks good
Classic Impreza - Of course!, Although I'd use this as an excuse to get something special!
Supra - Awesome car's, really like them and up there with dearer car's
Mitsi GTO TT - Heavy, not that quick all thing's considering

You can also look at:-
Nissan Pular/Sunny GTiR's
Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo
Nissan Skyline (R31/32)
Some of those, if not all will fall into your price bracket

Guess it depends what you want to do with your "toy"...??
Sure footed handling for country road blasts / sprints... early Scoob, Evo or GTiR
Bit od **** out fun & drifting... 200sx or R32 GTSt (the rwd one )
All would be a lot of fun striped out, caged & tweeked...

You would really struggle to find a decent Supra TT for that money mate.
The MR2 would be much fun and you should have change left over to make a few subtle mods. I had one and it was bullit proof. Nothing ever went wrong with it. Toyota were also pretty good with a price for the cambelt changing which is quite a tough job.
Miles of smiles!

If you can get away with 2 seats m8, get an MR2 Rev3 Turbo.
These cars are so much fun, and not that expensive to run. I get mostly 24-26mpg around town in mine.
0-60 in 5.2 seconds, 150mph+, rwd, 247bhp standard, easily tuned to 280bhp......... think i'll stop now!
Heres mine. Its for sale too. Unfortunatley, I need 4 seats.

sorry i didn't respond. the mr2 rev3 (& rev4/5) can be identified easily by the round rear lights, the other clue is the one piece spoiler (no fixtures on the rear wings). finally, they should only be MY94 L reg onwards, although some L reg cars are rev2s.
clutch change is not an engine out job and as others have said its very reliable, even when tuned.
your overall running costs will (in general) be lower than all of the others. for example, i thought about the supra, but whats the point? just as fast up to certain speeds but the mr2 uses less fuel, less insurance, cheaper to fix.
the celica has the same engine but is of course heavier. less speed, more practicality. depends if that matters.

From those 3 i would defo go for the MR2. I have had an MR2 Turbo, an impreza Type R and know many people that have had cossies
In my opinion the MR2 is :-
The most reliable
The most fun in everyday situations
Cheapest to run
The best looking (still doesnt look too dated)
The only one where the top comes off (if you go t-bar) for the 3 days a year that are nice
In fact the more I think about it, I wish I had one again too!!!!
Cheers

Lightweight kit with suitable engine. You might not get a 2nd hand Caterham for that price, but probably say a Sylva Striker or similar. With the right engine, fantasic handling, option for tail out fun, and would slaughter anything mentioned above as a track day toy - even decentish fuel economy and light weight means cheap on tyres, brakes etc to track.
Kind of most of the benefits (and some of the disadvantages) of a bike whilst still being a car
