Question The "Sport" button on new Astras

What does it do?

I've had a 1.8 Astra SRi hire car today and couldn't determine what changes pressing the button made.

Nice car though.

Press it, and your mind thinks you can go faster.

Most sport buttons just quicken up the throttle response and that's it. It doesn't give you any more power.

It does work, as long s your doing below about 45mph, travel along on light constant throttle, press it and it feels like you've punched the throttle about 10mm, quite funny, it sharpens the throttle up aswell so your usual steady pull away turns in to boy racer mode.

It is a damn good car for the money, good to drive and the 1.8 is better than our old 2liter zetec focus. I wanted the 2.2 tubo sri, wife wouldn't let me as she was the main driver.

Had a 1.8 Auto on hire through work and the only thing it seemed to do was cause it to kickdown one gear. Quite funny on the mway as if you pressed it at 90ish it would kickdown a gear and scream it's nuts off. It would shift back into top if you lifted but any throttle at all and it would shiftdown again.

My friend has the Sport Hatch 1.9cdti... 150bhp and 232 LB/FT torque out the box, you can get a £200 powerclick box and it ups it to 193bhp and 297LB/FT torque..
Enough to embarass some hot hatches.. especially with it being an oil burner

How long does the drivetrain last at that power level?

its only 40bhp and 60 LB/FT over standard output, I like to think they might of allowed for a bit of extra in the engineering.
Even in standard form they are enough to surprise a lot of supposedly quicker cars. The traction control isnt that bad, the handling is surprisingly good for a vauxhall too.

Can't speak for the other Astra's but the button on the VXR gives, like someone has already said more sharp throttle response and also stiffens up the suspension, i also believe with some of the remaps that is how you can use the full power upgrade 300bhp etc.

We had a Corsa auto for a bit, L reg and it had a sport button for the auto box, from what I could ascertain, all it did was make more noise, it was funny telling potential drivers of this car to hold on if they dared press the sport button !

This is vauxhall we're talking about here though, if they can save 50p per car by having a gearbox that can just handle the standard output and no more, then they will. Over-engineering is a taboo subject there!

£200 thats very cheap. Considering most remaps are in the £500-£600 region i wonder how good it could be for the car. It also seems at lot of gain for a generic add on box rather than a custom map. Maybe im being too pesimistic but it seems to good to be true at that price.
