Petrol or Diesel ?
Unfortunately a change in circumstances means I'll have to sell the scooby to buy something more motorway miles friendly. I'll be doing around 14000 mway miles a year and was thinking of something like a 53plate VW Golf. Question is do I go for the GT TDi or a petrol GTi taking into account initial purchase costs, depreciation, servicing costs, general running costs.

I think the diesel is the best bet. My dad has bought an Octavia TDi, gets 20,000 miles between services and often over 650 miles to a tank of diesel. It's the 115bhp model and feels very torquey - great for overtaking.
If you bought the gti you'd probably find yourself driving it faster than you would the diesel, and economy would be a lot worse thrashing that than the gt tdi. GT Tdi's hold their money amazingly well too - petrol gti's not so much.

For low fuel / running costs and lots of miles, deffo diesel.
As said above, don't overlook Octavias, fairly good residuals and they're roomy.
The older 110TDi engine can be a canny buy, it can be safely remapped to 130bhp / 210 lb-ft torque for £300 and will give 50+mpg all day on the motorways.
If speed doesn't bother you a standard 110 still goes pretty well and will give nearer 60mpg on m/ways.
My barge of a repmobile (3-year old Passat 130 Sport) cruises happily at 85 with a BIG seam of torque in reserve, and at this speed on an m-way trip gives a real (not fuel computer) 50mpg.

I drive a 530d at work and have to be honest and say that up to motorway speeds it is pretty quick ..... I know it's technically a 'performance' diesel but nonetheless if I did alot of miles privately I would almost certainly go diesel. The torque is great and makes for effortless driving.
I drove a Golf TDi 130 a couple of years ago and was amazed by it - very refined and quite nippy to say the least .....

Hi
I have been lucky enough to have both an 05 WRX and an MK5 Golf GTTdi 140 (uprated to about 180hp) at the same time.
The Golf does around 50mpg - regardless of how you drive it.
Mid range there is little to separate the golf with the scooby.
The golf is better equipped and built - really an awesome car for the money.
I would have no hesitation in recommending a diesel golf!
Cheers

Going from a scoob to old shape Golf you will find the steering lacks feel and the handling is very numb.
I'd definately go diesel but there are better driving diesels available.

Ford mondeo diesel (new shape) about half the price of the golf and a nicer car to be in on long journeys, BUT for 14k per annum, you dont really need a diesel, a petrol will suffice (from someone who does 30+k per year here ) but i do own a diesel now and it only really starts to pay for itself over 25k miles in reallity.
14k miles in an audi/vw/seat or skoda diesel means your paying for 1 service a year, some petrols are 15-20k services/2 years.
