Default Recommend my dad a car c:£20k

My dad retires in July and will be looking at a new car for his retirement pressy. Budget is £20k (ish). Can be up to a year old to open the choice up a bit.

Not doing a lot of miles now so economy not a problem. Currently has a Rover 620ti (since new in 1995) and loves it

He wants something with a bit of get up and go of a similar size but he isn't the boy-racer he once was so it doesn't have to be as quick as the Rover, just able to overtake now and then.

I thought about a turbo-diesel, with lots of torque, perhaps one of the VAG models?

He really likes the idea of a new x-type jag 2.2 diesel.

anything else we should look at?

Could always get what my Dad has, a Passat 2.0tdi. Having been in both the X-type and the Passat, the Passat walks all over it. 140hp at the moment but the 170hp version is coming soon.

The world's your lobster really.

Used A6? A fair choice of year-olds at 20k... either Tdi 2.7 or petrol I guess, 1.9tdi could be a bit feeble. A4 might be a bit small. A year-old A6 is ggod value imo, they depreciate more than similar BMs or Mercs. 20k might be a bit skinny for a good spec one though.

Legacy? I like them - 3.0r with a handful of miles for that £. Plenty of kit.

Accord 2.2dci? New I'd have thought, and likely to be very reliable. An Avensis would tick that box too, possibly in a slightly more boring manner.

Many cars are applicable to your dad. Just get a list of 5 possible cars, print out pics of them and let him choose which one he likes best. The audi's have the best interior by far though.

As a seventy three year old retired army major myself I am capable of seeing this through your fathers eyes, so to speak, son. Now then, he will have worked his entire life and as such, to retire and treat one's self to a "diesel" is not an option, he needs to be happy with his choice, he will probably be using it every day, he needs to look out of the window and feel a glow when he sees his pride and joy, something built by "The Hun", I think not. You mention the Jaguar, if that is what he wants, then that is what he should get. Please pass on my best wishes and I hope he has many happy miles in the "purring cat"

Some good replies (especially the 'Major' ). He doesn't have a problem with german cars, but wont entertain the idea of a Skoda (sorry VAG you failed miserably convincing him)

The diesel variant of the Jag was his idea. I don't suppose a petrol would be out of the question. The 170hp Passat sounds nice, as does an A6, I just wanted some ideas in case I missed an obvious candidate.

Is the X-type something that he will regret buying or are they generally ok?

My dad has an X-type sport 2.5 and loves it, the BMW 330 is a good choice IMO.

Thats a bit of a bold statement, diesels are coming on leaps & bounds these days some offering better performance than there petrol equivalent.

Proof in the pudding is Audi R10 Diesel engine Power win at Sebring at the begining of the week!!

Reason I sold my scooby - 18mpg is just ridiculous

You can't be a car snob at retirement

If he is insistent on showing wealth at the golf club I would definately go for the Audi.X type has smatterings of couldn't afford an XJ (though he could get a cracking bargain on second hand one)

Rest of us will be on the bus after retiring
