Audi A6 or BMW 5 series.
Hi there,
Looking at either a 2.4 or 2.8 Audi A6 or a BMW 523i for around 5K, both with manual gearboxes. The BMW is the sportier drive although the Audi looks to be slightly cheaper. Anyone got any comments on these two cars.
Some of the Audi's are 4WD. Does this make a big difference to the driving experience?
Also does anyone know when BMW changed the design of their engines to remove the nikasil wear problem? I think it was around 1998 / 1999 but I’m not sure.
Thanks and all the best.
Martin.

Drive 'em both and you decide: you absolutely need to drive both, as some people love the BMW, some people love the Audi.
I'd say you need to be looking for the quattro drivetrain on the audi. The BMW will be the more involving drive, the audi will be a nice car too; massive generalisation there, but it still seems to hold.

I had an Audi A6 2.8 quattro before my Scoob, an extremly capable car although you might be a tad dissapointed if you have come from a Scoob, they are a right heavy old barge and you really can feel the weight when you press on. but if its an autobahn stormer (or M25) you wont be dissapointed. extremley quick above 100 - but to be honest to expect much in the way of economy with that 2.8 and quattro 4 wheel drive.
Mine had 146k on it when i got rid of it and it did not miss a beat (apart from when i crashed it)
Never owned a BMW so cant comment

The 5-series and the A6 are both excellent cars.
The 5-series is the better drive, and has better engines, but the A6 is the best built and has the nicest interior - and looks more modern.

Fair enough,a lot had probs, but there aint now many on the market. The older E39's obviously havent suffered,if they did they will have the Alusil engine fitted in by now, newer E39's dont suffer at all...
Its no sweat really...
