Question Any diesel mechanics on board?

My lorry (VW LT50) has been a pig to start recently so I thought I'd take a look at the glow plugs. I can only remove those from the front 4 cylinders because the back 2 are covered by the diesel pump.

A couple of questions:

- How quickly should they 'light up'? I put each one across a fully charged battery in turn and there's a delay of a couple of seconds before they glow.

- When the glow light on the dash goes out (when the plugs have reached their working temperature), is the electrical supply to the glow plugs automatically disconnected?

TIA

Cheers
Kav

the delay sounds about right and some do stop the supply but some also continue to stay powered as it conditions the combustion to aid with cold running
