MX5 Owners (or others) - any advice?
Hi,
Picked up the wifes 'new' car today - 2.0 Launch Edition with 1500 on the clock - noticed the gearbox was very notchy (hard to engage 1st particularly) though got better after an hour of driving. Does this sound normal? If this is relevant, the car has been stood for 2 weeks whilst we were picking it up and is pretty cold today (-5).
Secondly, the oil gauge fluctuates from almost on 'L' (2 marks above) when idling to around 4 off 'H' when accelerating. Again, does this sound normal. I have checked the oil level following the handbook guidelines and its a little low so I will top up.
Never noticed any of my other cars gauges moving so much but not had an oil gauge on my last 2 diesel cars.

Hi,
I assume the oil gauge you're talking about is for the oil pressure? If so that sounds normal. My Mk1 MX5 has a similar gauge and it moves in the exact way you describe. The gearbox will loosen off with miles i suspect.

Thanks Chris, yes it the pressure gauge.
Just found the section in the manual relating to the oil guage - seems that what I am seeing is within the normal range. Just surprised it moves so much.

Never had problems with engaging first, could be that your clutch needs adjusting. Shouldn’t think it's anything to do with standing.
1st to 2nd is a different story, both the 5's we’ve had have always been notchy until warm, and even then it's never a sweet change.
Don't know what type of oil pressure gauge the Mk3 has. The Mk1 had a mechanical type, the Mk2/2.5 had an electrical type, which was useless and showed no variation in pressure. Your handbook might tell you what readings you should expect.
I'd run it for a while and see if it loosens up, if not then drop it back to the dealer and ask them to take a look.
