PEUGEOT 307 HDI RECOMMENDED OR NOT
Hello people I am in the market for a second car to the Scooby Type R. I want something that is well built, reliable, economical (therefore diesel), not too slow, 5 dr hatch, comfy, costs under £5500, less than 5 years old. Yeah I know I dont ask for much. Been looking at A3 tdi and Golf GT TDi and people want daft money for them! The 5dr Audi I can understand as it is pretty rare but why Golfs I know they are nice but not THAT nice. Anyway something pulled my attention to the 307 HDI, but did a bit of reserach on them and they are being slated. Was this early teething problems that have now been all sorted or are they still a no no.
Thanks Shuzzy

I know a few people have said bad things about them on here. But a mate of mine has owned one for 8 months and he's 100% happy with it, he had a 306TDI before that which did 150k miles without breaking down either.

Had a 307Hdi (90bhp)
There ok in sort of boring blobby car way.
Fine & comfortable on motorway journeys. Hdi 90 pretty slow, 110 better.
Dealers can be pants and things go wrong fairly often - mostly electrics and trim falling off.
Focus/golf probably better cars but 307's generally go for less money.
Ps Avoid the 1.4hdi 75bhp (its even slower than the 90).

We have a 1.6 petrol 307 and it's the worse car we have ever owned. Nice to drive and good handling etc, but the build quality is appalling. So many things gone wrong, glovebox breaking conitnually, rear doors being hard to open, trim inside and out just falling off, blocked radiator requiring complete replacement, rattles and squeaks...
I'd never buy another one and would never recommened them to anyone - and the older they get, the worse they get... we've had ours from new (now nearly 4 years)...

I've not owned a 307 but 2 people I know very well have.
Both of them had problems, 1 with steering, the other with suspension. Neither would even consider another Peugeot at his time.

I think there are mixed opinions. I wouldnt take one if you give it me. I'm through with Peugeot's had a 206 2.0Hdi, great economical engine. Vehicle electrics, terrible. Central locking played up, alarm packed up, electric fuel pressure reg knackered, engine management light on & off. Nothing but trouble. (Is French I suppose). I must have had a bad one, but would not touch them with a bargepole now. Prob a good word off peeps for every bad I say though. Tread very carefully.

Know a mate who had a 307 HDi for about 2years from new, and he had no problems with it, but said it wasnt that economical. He couldnt ever get anywhere near the quoted average MPG...

Hi
I had the first 110 HDI DTurbo in the UK (used to do a lot of work with Peugeot on diagnostics).
As already mentioned = these cars go and handle well - but are a bit fragile compared with a golf.
I had mine chipped - and the performance was fantastic.
MPG was 42-45 before and after chipping.
My only major problem was that the car started to use about 1 litre of coolant every 100 miles!!!
The performance was actually even better!!! - but a new engine was fitted under warranty - at 24000 miles.
I traded the car in for an Octavia vRS - this went and I got my 05 Reg WRX!
Cheers!

Do NOT BUY One....... I had 307 110HDI D turbo. Handled and very comfortable, but I am older than most on here and have had a stack of cars. This was a Company motor and in its 90k life it had mechanical and Electrical mayhem galore.
New Flywheel (twice), one gearbox, head gasket, 3 CPUs. It blew headlight and indicator bulbs every second week. IT WAS A DOG.
Fuel consumption as low as 36mpg if you pressed on, but 60 if you wanted to.
It is the only car I have ever head that I have hated. I was not sorry to see it driven into two days before it was replaced. I was just sorry that it was not 6 months into ownership!
I will Never have another Peugeot or PSA car (and I have had about 7 in my time).

Just picked up a 406 DT 1.9 as a runabout, £1500 has got me an immaculate R reg car, although it has 120,000 on the clock it still runs like clockwork and everything works (windows and A/C!).
Maybe a boring car but it does the job for now.
Worth considering IMO.

In general mate they are a pretty poor car residual values are crap a 53 plate with full service history will get dealer trade in at £4-4.5k for the hdi90. I would take a look at some car supermarkets and you will get the best value for money at the end of the day it is a 2nd car to the scoob.
