Default Vauxhall diesel engines

I'm looking to buy a cheap Vauxhall Astra Diesel Estate car.
I've received very conflicting reports about the diesel engines as some are fitted with Isuzu engines and some with Vauxhall engines. Some say the Vauxhall engines are unreliable and the head gaskets are liable to fail whereas others tend to suggest that the Isuzu engine is more expensive if anything goes wrong.

One I'm looking at is an R reg 1.7 GLS TD with 91,000 miles .

Anyone on here know anything about Vauxhall diesels?
Cheers

Sid

The Isuzu engine is the one to go for (black rocker cover), Vauxhall diesel (alley rocker cover) are the one's that suffer. my mate's got a vectra isuzu and its pretty good done 178K still going strong!!

Both isuzu and Vaux 8valve units are pretty damn good. Especially when compared to Ford's and Renualt's equivelants.

We ran the old Vaux engined 1.7 8 valve diesel Astramaxs to well past 100K miles (one was well over 200K).....the things were scrapped from falling apart from rust whilst the mechanicals were still strong.

Need to watch out for the early 16valvers though - especially if they have suffered a previous cambelt failure and not been repaired with new camshafts.
