Default £2-300 Runaround/beater.

Hi all,

Toying with the idea of getting a few hundred quids worth of runaround/beater for abandoning in Tescos car park without worrying and the 5 mile commute to work (round trip..lol!) as the scooby is barely getting warmed up by the time I get there. And I want to be able to throw the dog in the back without worrying about scratches, mud, dog hairs etc.

Any ideas of reliable old heaps that I might keep an eye open for?
Cheap to run, TP only insurance, don't care if it's diseasel or petrol, don't care about image, spare parts cheap as chips and readily available in breakers yards, that sort of thing. Not too big a barge though as the girlfriend will be using it too. Back to basics stuff.....

Ideas on a postcard....

Don't think the make/type of car is important at this price. Look for something that looks good (i.e. isn't a rust heap), is mechanically sound, mot, tax, not falling apart etc.

I agree,

For 300 pouunds anything with a long MOT and hopefully some tax is far more important than the vehicle itself.

A year ago I bought a VW polo for 250 pounds. It had 1 years MOT and six months tax. did 2000 miles in it before selling it for 250 pounds.

Martin.

Sierra - I've had two costing no more than £250. Excellent dog/mtb car. Both of mine were reliable and just kept going.

Audi 80,
built and engineered so well,
Ive got one and paid nothing for it.
1989 with 158k and runs superb.
Its a 1.8 carb and returns 38ish around town, 42 on a motorway run at 70-80mph.
Its in superb nick and there are still loads around.
Not very fashionable, and thats why they are cheap.
Most parts from GSF and dirt cheap/ very easy to service etc.
Hope this helps.

I had a proton, the thing was bullet proof, never let me down and always started first time, even after being left for 2 month while I used my bike.

i've got a D reg vw polo, cost me £20 from a car auction with 9 months tax and 6 months mot lol. Hasn't missed a beat, done nearly 3k miles since november and still starts and goes 1st time....

it's 1.3 so petrol costs hardly anything.

Got myself a Mondeo a few months back to abuse. 1993 1.8LX, 70k on the clock, 9 months MOT, £280. All i've spent on it so far is £20 on two tyres from the scrappy (it had remoulds on the front when I got it), and £12 on a set of plugs

I bought myself a n reg Laguna 2.2 diesel at the car auctions with months mot and 9 months tax for £300. A bit shabby on the outside but nearly full service history ,and can probably shift it for more when the tax is nearly up
