Audi Td or BMW Td
Feel the need to change cars again (had ST220 for 8 months after 6 yrs of Scoobs) and am thinking of Audi A6 2.5Td or BMW 525/530 Td.
No experience of these at all but both get good write ups. Any advices or recommendations. Also what model SE, Sport etc.
Only problem I can see with the diesels is that they all seem to carry mileage but the car does not seem any cheaper because of it.
Probably a bit of a change from what I am used to bit until the numbers come up and the Aston arrives it will have to be.

My Dad runs an old style A6 2.5 TDi quattro, it`s the 180bhp car. He`s had various diesel A6s and they`ve all been faultless. The present car is very swift and is built like the proverbial brick out-house. Economy is pretty poor around town though although his is the auto.
I`m sure the 530d is also a sound bet but you`ll probably be able to get more A6 for your money...........................

will be used, probably around 5 years old. as far as the beemer is concerned the 520d could be an option just worry that it may be a little underpowered.
as I said no real experience of these cars but fancy the change. I think!!!

If it's a 4 / 5 year old the Audi is the better bet IMHO. The BMW 2.5 diesel lump is a bit underpowered in the 5-series body, unless you can get a good deal on an early 530...

In the whole scheme of things, there's not THAT much difference. You need to drive them to see what you think. Personally I think the Audi looks much better with a really nice interior and is the more classy car. On the flipside, the bmw will be more fun to drive probably. However, you don't really buy these cars for 'fun driving'. They're more for relaxed, purposeful wafting along etc.

You might get better economy from the BMW unit as I owned an A4 2.5tdi Quattro with 180bhp running through an auto box and the economy was very un diesel like. Not great on motorway and only about 23mpg in town.

Youd get more for your money from the audi but id get the BMW out of the two. You could get a B6 audi A4 which are very nice and not far beheind the current A4 in interior styling. Driving dynamics are also above that of the C-class. Engines are a real gem.

When buying older 2.0d BMW's always check which one you are getting as they came in 115,130 and 150bhp versions before the current model.
I wouldn't bother with the 115 or 130 may as well get a VAG 1.9 PD130 and then at leat you would get the economy and scope for mapping.
Between the old 2.5V6 Audi and BMW 3.0D the BMW wins hands down, the Audi unit is low tech and not all that economical. The new Audi 3.0V6 TDI is amazing though.

cheers guys.
I still can't decide, will need to go and drive a few. Beemers looking favourite as there are more within my price range.
I know the engines are capable of the high mileages but am concerned about the wear and tear on the rest of the car. I'm a bit like that as I can't remember the last time I had a car with more than 50k on the clock.
