Project Pug 306
A few months ago now i purchased (off ebay ) a nice clean example of a pug 306 S16 (last of the line) with lowish miles (72k) and only one or two minor faults (hence it only cost me 410 quid).
Biggest fault being the head gasket had gone, and the rather large hole in the rad which caused the head gasket to go.... oooops!
But today ive got her back, and after over 2 years sitting looking depressed, shes now sitting looking not quite as depressed though still SORN and in need of a complete exhaust to get her back on the road, then ill end up with a very nice mint example of one of these hot hatches
Problems encountered so far:-
Headgasket (350 quid)
Radiator (90 quid for an alloy one)
front fogs (2 replacements for 50 quid)
Heater blowing cold air (coolant system poss needs bleeding still)
all 4 alloys are starting to corrode so need to be resprayed, though they are in excellent condition otherwise.
Interior is mint, no rips or tears, no other major problems encountered either.
Hopefully another 500 quid and she will be back on the road
No dents on the body work but a slight crack in the bumper, though i do know a man who can fix that for me
Hopefully i'll have her back on the road (or track ) well before the summer
Just need to get the polish out as she has a few dull panels
Who said you cant buy anything decent off ebay?
Tony

Both are 2.0 16v's however the GTi6 is 167bhp as standard, about 15 more than the S16. S16 is a 5 speed also.
S16 engine is same as that found in the 405 MI.
The '6 just addressed the issues/downfalls of the S16.

A Rallye in standard form is lighter than a '6 - no suede/leather seats, no A/C and a few other weight savings.
Now mine is stripped it's exactly how a Rallye would be if stripped (except mine has A/C - which is nice on a roasting day in Nurburg).

Older 306s were prone to blowing heater matrices, so if you continnue to get cold air, I'd look at that too - especially if you have a puddle in the passenger footwell!
Otherwise, good luck and enjoy. I've always liked the way the 306s handle (having done 10k miles in the last 3 months in a DTurbo cheap commuter-mobile I'm quite used to the chassis - just I don't have the power/throttle response to liven up the drive that way!)
