Thoughts on the old nissan pulsar? As a little project!
Hi guys, im currently running a 52 plate wrx impreza but unfortunatly im at that age where i need to get on the property ladder. The scoob will be sold after summer and im thinking of getting something as a project. There are loads of tatty nissans on ebay with engine trouble or lots of other things. Ive been told they are fast but im just wondering what parts cost and how likely i am to find them?
If they cost anywhere neer like a scoob ie-petrol/servicing im gonna steer clear.
Cheers

If your looking at the car as a weekender only then I don't see the problem. And personally I'd just find a nice straight standard example and look after it well.
Fuel in a GTIR is a complete joke. My MY00 UK Impreza is costing me half what the GTIR did in fuel, insurance and servicing.
Don't get me wrong, I love them and would have another tomorrow if I could. I'd only buy one for the weekends and would either go completely standard or completely bonkers, in between probably means its cost the previous owner a fortune and he's trying to get rid.

having used to own one I can tell you that every problem you hear about with a scoob the gtir/pulsar is better.
You think the scoob has understeer? nissan is a lot worse
You think the scoobs brakes are rubbish. Hmmm Nissan use the same brakes for the 2ltr sunny gti as they do on the gtir. Throw in a lot more weight, and a lot more power and you have a seriously under braked car. I actually got tarox 6 pot calipers and massive discs for mine to alleviate the problem.
Parts are not cheap and can be hard to source (not as common in breakers yards) Nissan dealers dont generally know what your on about but luckily my nissan dealer (no gone bust) used to let me look on the computer which was quite a good system.
Gearboxes are notoriously weak. Even a mild power increase can set them going. It is a pita to change them as well.
For working on the car there is very little access in the engine bay although changing plugs is relatively easy. I think most jobs would be an engine out job due to access
Fuel economy??? First night I had mine, I got 96 miles to the tank before re filling up again. (it did flame though)
Personally I think you would be better with an old classic.

My mate used to a lovely GTIr.
Was knocking out about 300bhp and was crazy to drive. It used to eat clutches regularly and parts were hard to find. Lot of fun though and definately more exclusive the the Scoob. He offered me it for £5000 when I bought the Scoob and I still regret saying no.
Im not one for war stories but we once nailed a Porker 911 from a rolling start between about 30mph and 80mph, lots of fun.

i've had a K reg one and it was a good car but cost a fortune to own, does between 12-14mpg on a good day. brakes are a joke and so is the clutch, nothing is cheap for them and nobody has a clue if something goes wrong unless its a specialist then you've got to pay!! your local Nissan garage won't be any help with parts, servicing or even any knowledge about them.

I owned a 93 L car for just over 2 years. It was a real pleasure to own!!
MPG wasn't great but if its just a weekend car then petrol shouldn't be a main concern. I only changed the exhaust, uprated brake discs, pads & hoses, filter and plugs.
The car didn't need anything else done to it in 2 years of ownership. Just servicing which didn't break the bank. I was sorry to see it go when it did but I px'd it for an Evo which is arguably more expensive to run!!
If you're planing big power gearbox, clutch, suspension, brakes and engine will need alot of attention and ££££'s, but in standard trim they're awsome.

220 bhp, 0-62 in 5.5 secs I think. Go to the gtir oc for more info. Can't remeber the URL but stick that in google.
When I started looking for another 2 door car I started looking at Pulsars again but chose a scoob type r instead. Would get one if i had enough space on the drive and the price was right.

As someone who's currently owned one for 3.5years.
Fuel consumption is about 24mpg average, booting it will bring it right down like any other turbo car.
Gearboxes can break in standard cars or last in modified cars. Some owners have run low 11s on the standard box.
Parts are not always hard to get as more cars are being broken for spares these days. Dealer only parts can take longer to get sometimes.
Brakes are not brilliant, certainly need sorting. My 100% standard brakes have coped well in my 12.4sec car.
I finally killed my standard clutch last september after my 3.5years of draggin and however long it was in before that.
My car has had a power steering pump and the clutch in those 3.5years.
Parts for a full service will cost you £200ish (excluding plugs, 60000mile life) for leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, fuel filter, oil filter, engine oil, gearbox oil, transfer box oil, diff oil.
Standard internals can cope with 400bhp+ if the fuel and ignition is spot on.
Don't believe any of that you need a full forged rebuild above 1bar bollox.
Standard filter/exhaust and 1bar will see 275bhp on average.
ps my 12.4 was on about 260bhp

I beat a WR1 up the strip with 85bhp less. He did a 13.2
An average 1bar one should do high 12s. Check last months J Tuner mag out. (Mine was the least powerful one in the feature )

I'd love an R, was going to get one but the repair prices and fuel bills scared me off.
If i was ever in a position where i had a works van/company vehicle and wanted somthing cheap and fun for weekends i'd definatley be looking for an R. They are a hoot to drive

Dont think youll get much positive feedback on scoobynet about the pulsar due to most of them getting scalped at some point by the little nissan! In a well sorted Pulsar you,ll dent many an ego on the roads/track.
