Reliable cheap 4x4 - pref estate or hatch
Ok I am weighing up my options about what to do, I am due out in the alps in the next few days and if my banger of a rover is uneconomical to fix I need to change
So I thought as I am going to be driving on snow a lot that a 4x4 of some discription may be useful - providing they don't become a money pit!
Don't want to spend more than £2500 really so any ideas?
Legacy - like the looks and practicality but cost of maintainance and parts are a bit of a worry in the middle of france? also what one should I consider? no idea if they are all 4x4 what engine to go for etc? any help would be great!
Mk 5 escort RS2000 4x4 - quite rare and have mostly been abused but they have a chain driven cam system and parts should be easy as its the i4 engine shared with the sierra i think? not sure how reliable the 4wd system is? and if its mega bucks to fix if it goes wrong
Alfa 33 p4 - I know this is not an ideal car but my mate has a clover leaf one and it rocks! again parts and 4x4 system a worry
Landy of some discription - good load space for skis etc but recon fuel might be an issue!
Any other ideas? - can cope with a left hooker but want to keep insurance costs down so no Intergrales unfortunatley!!
Thanks
Andy

There's a stack load of old 5-dr Rav4s available at that price, and France is full of them. Toyota are usually reliable. Not sure if you're bugged about the girly image though. If so, there are one or two LandCruisers available.

BTW despite the economy, I'd go for petrol rather than diesel, which freezes easier at cold temps IIRC.
A more car-like solution would be an old Audi with quattro, but I don't know about those...
