Exclamation Is the Old Mans car a Gonner?

alrite Scoobyheads!!

The old boys having trouble with his car anyone know what it would be
  • Starter motor spins but doesn't connect to crank, this happens 8 times out of 10 attempts
  • when he does get it started he will drive for 5 mins (along a straight A road 60 mph constant) then it will just cut out and not start for 5 minutes..then after 5 mins starts and stutters away like gareth gates running for a taxi
  • Fuel consumption has sky rocketed
all of the above occur with plenty of petrol in so its not through lack of petrol in the tank

to be fair its a MY95 primera and his idea of driving it hard is doing 30 in third

is it worth or can it be sorted or will it cost a sh1tload and not worth wasting the cash on? The old boy has no intention of getting a scoob so no point saying sell it scrap it buy a scoob

Is it an injection or carb engine?

Well the solenoid on the starter motor is mostly certainly not working...get yourself a refurbed exhange starter motor.

The cutting out and not starting for 5 minutes relate directly to the excessive fuel consumption which is flooding the engine...could well be a simple solution but not too sure what.

If its carb it could be a broken float which is easy to replace with a few screwdrivers and gasket set. If injection it could be many things.

OR just take it out and put a link between the two main contacts, if it still does the same thing it's obviously not your problem.

For your running fault,i would start at coolant temp sensor, then Lambda sensor.More info needed to make an accurate diagnosis, but primera's are usually trouble free.
Only ever heard of the throttle body causing probs, sometimes this causes poor idle, drivabilty and starting issues.
Starter motor is your 1st port of call.

That's about as wrong as you can get! The solenoid is working otherwise the starter wouldn't spin! Sounds to me like to pinion gear is getting stuck and can't come out to engage the ring gear, take the starter off and clean the shaft up and get some lube on it.

the car started after 10 attempts today. he then left it running for 10 mins while he went for a paper

drove off and drove 30 miles without any incident

does that shed more light on problems...thanks for the help so far
