What Tires for my Astra.
I will need to get (a set of 4) new tyres for my astra as the ones on my car are getting low on tread. The tyres that are on at the mo are Bridgestone RE720 195/55/15/ V rating.
They have been ok. they are crap in the wet and ok in the dry. I have done 10k in them since may 2004. Don't ask me how I drive you don't want to know!
I was thinking about getting Toyo or Kumho or Fulda brands. but which one?
I want more grip than life, say (give or take) 60%/40% split respectively.
If i was to go for the toyo I would go for the Proxes T1-R , but the other two makes i don't know much about. I know lots of subaru and evo drivers and the likes love the Proxes T1-R, so they must be good.
Options advice need please. at the mo i am leaning towards the toyo's
Wheres a good pleace to get thrm from? anyone line places. I have looked on http://www.mytyres.co.uk/start.html.
what about actual tyre fit places?
Cheers

Mytyres were really cheap (£30-odd) for Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's in 195/50/15 when I checked the other day.
I wouldnt use anything else, have heard poor reports on the T1-R's so will be sticking with Eagle F1's come renewal time.
Cheers,
Grant

i used mytyres when buying my Eagle F1's. Good price and good service.
Never used the Toyo's myself but i've heard others say whilst their grip in the dry may be better than the F1's they won't last anywhere near as long.

I've always found the grip is just as good in the wet with both GSD2 and GSD3 Goodyear Eagle F1's.... I had T1-S on my old MY98 and it was good in the dry, but in the wet, it was well off the performance that I got from the Goodyears.

I'm running Toyo T1-R 195 55 15s V rated on an Almera GTi, and they've been fine so far. That's to say, I haven't been sideways round a roundabout by mistake, and they haven't worn out yet . Otherwise, grip's far better than the old ones, which were a cheapo brand, and I'm very happy with 'em.
I didn't go for the Eagles, as I was hearing that they were quite a soft tread - good grip, but not lasting very long.
Look quite cool as well
- I was under the impression that the T1-R was replacing the S, but they're both still available, so not too sure now... I think the R has stiffer sidewalls than the S (Could be other way around tbh, I can't remember)

Thank you very much for that info mate. thats just what i wanted
So i believe, is that the 'R' replaced the 'S', thus better.

I have just put 2 new front tyres on my Mk4 Astra GSI Turbo. Having always had GY Eagle F1's in the past I decided to go for something different and try the Toyo T1-R's.
So far they have proved equal in performance to the GY Eagle F1 GSD3's in both the wet and the dry - I can't honestly say I have noticed much advantage to either. The one significant difference I have noticed is that the Toyo tyres are considerably quieter. They just don't seem to transfer road noise in the same way that the Eagles did and as a result you get a much quieter ride. Lastability I can't comment on as they have only been on the car for about a week.
Personally I don't think there is much in it between these 2 tyres - both get highly rated in the tests that are carried out and there's very little difference in price. Just depends which you can get for cheaper.
Just as a closing thought - www.elite-direct.com in Rainham, Essex will do you 2 Toyo T1-R's fully fitted for £168.

Right OK then,
My mum went down to Pan Autos in Southdown (South Harpenden) and got quotes for the said tyres:
Toyo Proxes T1-R
GoodYear Eagle F1 GSD3
Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31
They said that the toyos that could not get and he did not recomemend them as a lot of young people in their fast cars where haveing problems with them...is he trying to blow me off
The GY Eagle F1 they do not do
but instead the GY NCT5 for £341.46 fitted (balanced valves etc...)
Kumho Ecsta SPT Ku31 £223.96 fitted etc...
I would like to get toyos, i am going to phone around and see what aother tyre places say.

What kind of problems were they having? Or did he not specify?
Doesn't sound quite right to me, as the T1-R is a pretty common tyre, as is the F1...... Try a different place.

Heard that the sidewalls had some flexing issues when the T1-R's first came out... I've also been told from a friend who has tried both on his P1 that the T1-R's wet performance wasnt quite in the same league as F1's he's got on now.

t1-r's are flipping brilliant in the wet ,i had michelin pilot sports before the toyo's and the toyo's are are in another league, brilliant grip wet and dry.
Its no surprise to me that a dealer who doesnt sell toyo slags them off,ive heard it all before ,whatever they sell is always the best and anything else is rubbish, yeah right
