Kit cars pretending to be exotica
Was filling up tonight at the local Shell, when a 'Ferrari' 355 pulls in. Now I'm no expert but it sounded distinctly different to others I have heard and more like an MR2
Got me wondering why people go to such trouble and buy/make a fake.
I appreciate that people want to be different (hence why most of us do mods to our cars), or that its too expensive to buy a genuine car, but whatever happens it will only ever be the donor car pretending to be something it isn't.
Please don't think I knocking kit cars as there are some really good things out there, I just don't understand the mock Ferrari/Lambo types.
Thoughts?

They certainly seem a bit pointless now though.

A cobra or GT40 replica with the right engine, i.e a big V8, are OK in my book. Unless you want to fork out thousands for an original.
Personally I would love a Porsche 356 replica. But look alikes with no go should be burnt! Like the RS200 metro or pinto engined cobras.

There are some very good replica kits. But sadly far too many crap ones (not helped by DIYers building them making a hash of it )
Some of best ones are indeed the replicas of the Cobra.
Best one I've seen is one of a Ferrari 348TS with a mid/rear mounted Jag v12 running with 6 webers and 500bhp
I have only seen one decent MR2 (or pontiac Fierro for that) based 355 replica though, most I've seen have very poor fibreglass mouldings that have bumps and ripples all over the place, and most still keep the stock interior
The corbin Porsche is a pretty good replica kit. But I just cry (from botyh dispair and laughter) when I look in the engine bay and find a horrible bog standard Ford CVH engine. A friend of my dad had one as a trade in (car dealer) which he used for himself before he flogged it. He claimed it was a real 911 Turbo (as a laugh), and everyone belived him, I saw it several times in the garage or on his the drive and there was nothing that would suggest it wasn't (I didn't tap the panels...that would have told me instantly by the sound ). What did give him away was when he drove past me the once and I heard it running, the noise it made, or indeed the lack of flat 6 grumble and the distinctive lack of howl from the cooling fan gave the game away.
I quite like to have have one of these though: http://www.vanwallcars.com/html/hist...internatio.htm
Not a "true" accurate replica, but still very cool.
One thing about a replica that I insist is that it should the mechanicals equal to the original. So no half dead Ford CVHs/kent/pintos ripped straight out of a Cortina I'd even sneer at a Rover v8 in some applications (i.e cobra - unless highly modded).
