Just sold mine.
Great cars...320+ bhp in a Z3 Estate.
I'd recommend one in a heartbeat...but get one with a full service history. Dealer or specialist...I'm not sure it matters.
Whats yer budget as ones you'd want start at about 16/17K?
The troops at http://www.z3mcoupe.com/forum2/index.php will answer any and all questions. Friendly bunch too.

Interestingly enough, I saw a Z3 drop top with a V8 badge on the back a few weeks ago parked in Carmarthen. I wonder if someones managed to shoehorn an M5 engine into it?

I ran one for four years a while back. It was fantastic - no real problems in my ownership and a truly great drive. Unfortunately I passed it on to a friend (thankfully at a bargain price) and it all went wrong. The Vanos system failed at about 25k miles. The car was out of warranty and BMW covered 80-90% of the bill. It then failed again within 3k miles of being replaced. BMW footed the whole bill this time.
In the time that my friend owned it it also needed new cats and a new ECM.
He has since traded it in for a new 5-series but is now on the look-out for another as he is bored with the 5. I know that the Vanos problems are not uncommon but I don't think that the other problems are typical.
Despite this I would have another in a flash if I didn't have 2 kids to cart about. A trip to the highlands back in 2000 provided me with my best driving memories ever.

as has been alluded to goto a M forum and check on the engines - some of these have been having major problems as well as chassis cracking...but they do look awesome and will no doubt become a classic in time - I had a Z3 and it was totally underpowered for it's weight - it really needs that xtra oomph...also if your a big lad check you can fit in it - they can be a bit of a knees up around the wheel job...
that said - you'll never regret buying a GOOD porsche..

If S54 engine they'll have all the recall issues before Jun 2003. Additionally, BMW are from next month ruining their previously excellent extended warranty, which a lot consider very important. The price goes up for M cars, especially after 60000 miles (£1868 per year) and now they can't be covered after 100000 miles. There is a £250 excess per claim and now more exclusions.
Used to be about £750, unlimited miles, fewer exclusions and no excess.

Thanks for all of the info guys
Test drove it yesterday, but it hadn't been driven for a few months and it had some hesitation when accelerating quickly. The dealer said they would do the Inspection 2 service and oil change and then to test it again
It didn't feel like a sub 5 second - 60mph car
I'll have to see what its like next week

Keep the revs up though and it will fly. The handling is much sharper and more fun than the scoob too but you probably don't want to test that too much on a test drive!
