quick cars for <4k
Hi all,
I am after a new (secondhand) car, have a max of 4k to spend (excluding insurance). My main criteria is that it is quick, i dont mind fuel consuption too much, and i accept that insurance will be expensive. I dont really want to go over 10 years old, and i dont want a modified car in anyway (makes insurance even more expensive).
So far i have come up with the following:
200sx s14a
Corrado vr6 or maybe golf vr6
Mk4 golf gti (not sure if i could get one for 4k)
Your ideas and suggestions would be welcomed.

Another vote for the Corrado VR6, had one for 18 months.
Be careful, not as entirely reliable as you may think. 4k will get you a 93/94 car with ~100k on the clock. A lot of people recommend the timing chains being changed at this mileage - not really the problem of the chains, just the crap tensioners - can apparently be changed for a Mk IV jobbie I believe.
Thing is replacing the both top and bottom tensioner is a gearbox out job, so clutch replacement is advised at the same time. Add in the fact that some engines (mine did) need the valve guides replacing and it becomes a >£1k job.
To be honest, not much else to look for - you'll hear if the chains are on the way out (but beware, the VR6 isn't the quietest of engines!) and if you look for signs of oil burning you can't go far wrong!
I loved mine! It isn't the quickest thing out there, but is entriely capable and a joy to drive. If you want some real poke add a supercharger!!
Cheers,
Nev
PS Oh yeah - forgot about premature bore wear, some have suffered from this due to overheating (fairly cramped engine bay). Again if it is burning oil I'd walk away if it was my cash!

200sx again.
Get a nice S14a, have a blast. I spent 2 years doing non stop drift days in my old S14a and the only thing that went was the turbo gasket.
Apart from that it was solid as a rock, drifted like nothing else I've owned either.
astraboy.

as my username suggests, 200sx all the way. mines done 120k now and touch wood, never let me down in just over 2 years of driving pretty hard at higher than standard boost. well' apart from the turbo gaskets, but thats quite a common thing, and even then you can keep on driving it if need be.

and big power easily available.
