Question vauxhall omega 3.0 mv6 gearbox acting strange!!

as title, mate has a 3.0 mvg omega auto, 1998 model.

usually, after pulling off gently, the box will change from 2nd to 3rd gear at about 2000rpm.
however, it is quite common now for it to stay in 2nd and the revs just rise and rise without it changing up, then as soon as the throttle is released it comes out of gear.

any ideas?
could it be the gearbox speed sensor or anything like that?

any help really appreciated, cheers.

The rule of thumb with auto boxes is before you do anything, drop the fluid, flush and refill with new stuff. You'd be suprised how often this cures problems. If you've still got problems with new fluid in it, prepare to touch your toes and think of England as you get bum raped by a specialist. Hope this helps.

From memory I think the omega auto has a small internal filter thingy in the auto box as well...................... could be wrong but the father in law used to have one and sure he used to get that changed as well.

thanks for the replies

he had a big service on it not so long back by a main dealer, so will ask him if they changed the box fluid, and if not, will give it a go and fingers crossed it will sort the problem.

thanks again

Question

askim him today, he said that it wasnt part of the service, but as the car has done 80,000+ and poss still original gearbox oil, he enquired a few months back at a vauxhall main dealer and asked if they would change the oil, and their reply was that they do not advise changing it, and to leave it as it is?

any comments to that?

thanks

It should be on it's 3rd load of fluid by now (IIRC you should change it every 40,000).

Has he checked the level? Maybe it's just low on fluid? He should at least look at the state of the fluid. If it's red it's new, if it's brown it's old, if it smells burnt the box is going to need some serious work.

These are a pain in the *** to fill up if you flush them.
They take 8.8ltrs (yes 8.8ltrs!!) of auto gearbox fluid to fill up, really you need a gearbox speciallist to fill it up, saves you alot of time and hassle as you have to have the car running to fill up this gearbox fully (ask me about it as i had a problem with one of these gearboxes )
Find a good auto gearbox speciallist
