Alternative to scoob - fast but good fuel economy?
I am considering returning my Scoob to motorpoint on the grounds that it has no warranty
If i succeed, i will have £17,500 to spend on a car, but what should i get?
i want a new or nearly new car which will still be fast, but more fuel economical then the scoob (i do 70 miles a day, mostly on motorways)
Ideally i also want 4wd & an auto gear box for my money, and i want it to be unmodded.
at the moment i am thinking a Mk 5 Golf GT TDi 4motion (or DSG unfortunately you can't have both)
that will do 35mpg round town and almost 60 on motorways.
i know i will miss the raw power, but i reckon the extra torque at low revs will make up for it.
an S3 would be nice, but maybe a bit too pricey?

How about a DSG Golf GTI. They are meant to be very good on fuel considering they are 200hp - and for a FWD the traction / grip is as good as it gets - so I have read.......

I would imagine the GTI to get 30-32. My diesel Fabia gets 33-34, i could get 38-40 but not a deal more. If you need more than 30 mpg, looks like a 4 pot diesel is the one for you - lol. The VAG stuff is very good, BMW 4 pot diesels are also quite good.

oh and fast means 150bhp+ ideally sub 8 seconds to 60 (golf gt tdi is 9.3 secs )

My remapped Fabia did a recorded 6.6 0-60 [book says 9.3] and continues to 145 mph on the speedo, and circa 136 GPS, and golfs have a lower drag co efficientcy so they could be classed as fast......

well i think that settles it then. i'll do without 4wd (can't afford an A3) and go for a GT TDi DSG. i'll get some kind of removeable remapper (thats assuming motorpoint play ball and give me my money back!)
what about a leon? i'd also like the car to be worth something when i sell it- do they hold any value?

Friend of mine bought a Sportback, just the 2.0 sport.
After 3 months and 6 visits to the dealer they handed it back and got all there money back, it was a piece of 5hite, lemon flavoured 5hite that it!!!
Worse car they every owned, and that includes a metro and a rover 200!! Now thats saying something.

i did (briefly) consider a CTR before i got the scoob, but its a bit small + i need 5 doors and fuel economy is practically identical to a WRX
i will be going the UK route after getting my fingers burned by motorpoint
