I have a 2001 Frontera and from what I have heard they are 1000 times better than the 'older' frontera.
FWIW I really like mine. Quite refined really. It just so happened to come up and I had fancied a 4x4. I had though it may have been a little agricultural but both the wife and I like driving it.
As I say, having spoken to a Vauxhall mechanic and mentioned to him that I was getting one he made lots of hmm'ing and blowing noises until I mentioned it was a newer one.

had new 2.3d in 1993 , got head gasket under warranty but was fine otherwise.
traded in 1999 for 2.2d , more road car. not as good off-road as 2.3. it had less grunt low down but went better higher up.
traded last year for mitsi L200 animal which is a thirsty bucket of **** that has already had more spanner work than both fronteras ever did.
we may have been lucky with fronteras and unlucky with L200 but I would buy frontera before another mitsi
