Default Ford Probe 24v - any good?

Thinking of buying one. Seen a 95M with 81k up for $995. Air con, cruise, leather....

Views please.

Boot space reasonable? Fuel consumption - gotta be better than the WRX???

Boot is hooooooge, shame the interior isn't!

I had a 95M 16V a few years back. Had great seats which grip your sides so you stay in!

Can't remember the fuel consumption so can't help.

A mate had one (in white) on a 94L.

A bit boat like to manoeuvre, quite long overhangs ISTR.

Aerodynamic and good high speed cruiser. MPG would be good compared to an STi (you'd have to look up the numbers though). Cruise control handy. 168bhp engine, V6 sounds good, though muted. Mate referred to 3rd as 'the gear of death'.

Parts can be difficult to get hold of quickly. Unlike any else Ford-like at the time, so dealers stumped etc. Mazda dealers can be useful as Probe was based on MX6.

Interior cramped for me (6' 2"). I journeyed in the back of it once but only by lying across the seats. More or a 2 rather than a 2+2. Interior plastics and trim distinctly Escort/Mondeo like (1994 remember).

Poor car rescued by a fantastic engine .... but then, as mentioned, its a Mazda unit, not a Ford one!

IIRC my mates 24v might have been better than a WRX for mpg .... but not by much!

Cracking engine as stated above.
Prob. looking at 28-32 mpg if driven sensibly.
I think it's a wee bit dear at that though.

28-32 is a bit optimistic, I considered the Mazda MX6 which is basically the same thing and they (they all have the V6) were early twenties with some dipping into the teens knocking around town according to the guys on the forum.

Would agree .... early 20's would be more realistic!

Did Gareth Cheeseman driving a Probe not cause the sales to plummet overnight!!

I believe the Mondeo had the Ford Duratec V6 rather than the Mazda lump. Both good engines but the Mazda was a little bit thirstier.
