Ok so the MK4 TDi is top of the list. 4-6k whack gets me an 80k oil burner on an S, T or X plate. 50 - 60mpg, enough room for the pram & baby seat... cheap to insure (Group 10) and nippy enough to still raise a small smile.. (not as much as the 400bhp classic I have mind.. )
What are the other options before I comit to the golf?
Remember this is not a performance* car but a daily chuffer for top whack 6k..

Scoobydoo...If your gonna go for VW chip fat burner, make sure it has NO running issues at all.You can be into £££££ to sort out,AFM probs, the Bosch FBW pumps have a habit of packing in.Turbo wastegate packs are also a favourite. If Passat is the choice, cambelt are a fair few £££,so make sure its been done, also collapsing AUX belt tensioner is common.
If car has aircon/climate..Check fan blows correctly and smoothly, also check aircon display DOESNT flash for a few seconds on initial start(AC prob).
AC compressors and driers are problematic too..
All start going around 70k+..have done turbo's at under 30k..
Just a few things to check!!
Good luck..

I had a golf gt tdi 115 on a w plate for 7 months this year. Did well over 10k in it (was on 80k when I bought it)
Bought for 5,500 and sold for 5,300. Not one thing went wrong with it. Comfortable to drive, discreet on motorways when you're really shifting, and a return of well over 50 mpg, nearer to 60.
I think the prices for the gt tdis are very similar to a year ago, maybe even dearer slightly. You won't lose a penny on it. I chipped mine with a 20 quid tuning box from Ebay as well.

Gf at the time was living 240 miles away in N wales, so needed something that was a hell of a lot cheaper than a P1. Could get there and back on one tank of fuel. The tuning box was ok, havent heard any bad reports about them at all. The golf was so good I did only 300 miles in my p1 in the time I had the golf.
The only problem with the Golf was that the ride was quite wobbly on twisty roads, but I could easily live with that. The grin i got seeing sometimes 65 mpg on the trip more than made up for it
