171mph in a rover 214??!!

171mph in a rover 214??!!
was chatting with this bird at work and she informed me that she and her friend had propelled them both to 171mph in this rover 214...... after i stopped laughing she changed her story slightly to ok it was a rover 214 but it either had a honda 1600 engine or maybe even a 2.0L...oh and it wasnt 171mph anymore it was a respectable 165mph (women talk so much crap!). I told her that this was not possible... that even a 2.0L NA engine on FWD would struggle to get to that kinda speed.
could anybody support her case? i dont think its possible unless it was the most highly tuned machine! Obviously being a woman she knew very little and was a bit sketchy on the details.

Put enough engine in anything, you'll propel it to 171mph. A NA 2.0 in touring car tune (say~300bhp) would probably be enough to drag a rover 214 up to an indicated on the speedo 170 (i.e a real 155). Similarly, a suitably tweaked 220 Turbo would probably be able to reach that sort of speed indicated.
Admittedly, if it didn't have any other mods, I don't think I'd want to be anywhere near it at that speed, and I somehow doubt that the car in question had all those. Chances are she's not from this planet, but it's not impossible.
Are you sure it wasn't a lhd car and she was reading the speed in kph - that would be an entirely realistic top speed for a standard rover 214!

Ive got a rover coupe with the 1.6 honda D series engine in and its redlined in 5th at around 132mph on the clocks and the 2.0 is only fractionally higher than that

I got one of the works CVT auto 216 Rovers upto 140mph (ish) whilst in Germany with a good down hill stretch and a tail wind Backed off though as it felt like it was going to take off...gearbox started making a screaming noise on kickdown after that run too...oops (I won't tell you the bill to fix it either) 
(3000rpm at 80mph....so gearing wise it could have done 160mph+ )
Doubt the manuals could do this as they had much shorter gearing than the CVT Automatics.

I told this story to one of the blokes in work and a women over heard, she said why would you want to hear your car? I said its a nice sound, its a performance car, she laughed and said to her friend in the most annoying voice it must be a man thing
best I could come back with was you stick to your pram I'll go fast...
