Default Diesel trouble

My neighbours vectra diesel (98R) will not start if left over night or a couple of days, once started it is fine as long as he doesn't leave it too long. The only way to get him going is remove the air box lid and squirt eazy-start up into the air feed, then after a bit of turning over it starts? Any ideas.

Pour more eazy-start over the entire car, then drop a match on the thing, hey presto, problem solved.

I second that. If he is having problems starting it get him to switch the ignition on for a few seconds but not start the car then switch off and then back on again a few times then try starting the car after a few switches.

A mate had similar problems, it was a timing fault in the fuel pump IIRC

This was on a puegeuot BTW, where the mechanical fuel pump fed each individual injector, if his is one of these new fangled common rail jobbies it might a completely different problem.

I had a 2.0DTi Vectra with 85k on the clock. It would start, run for 10 seconds then splutter and die, with no amount of throttle keeping it going. It eventually went away, and was fine when I sold the car

Below is some info I found at the time from another web site which might be the same sort of problem you friend is having:

Had the same problem with my 97 Vectra dti. Left the car for a while and couldn't get it to start. After messing around with it i found out the level of diesel in the fuel filter was dropping after being left for a while and there fore it couldn't draw diesel through the filter housing and in to the pump. I then found a very nice mechanic at a Vauxhal garage explained what was happening and he suggested check the leak off pipes from the injectors to the pump. These pipes are made of rubber and i found mine to be hard and britle where as they should be supple i replaced the hose from all the injectors to the pump and hey presto! it worked cost me about a tenner in hose and a bit of time but saved a few quid. If that doesn't work the mechanic said it could be the seals on the injectors which need to be done at a garage. but try the rubber pipe first.

Hope this helps

Stu

First job is to replace the heater plugs; if this doesnt cure the problem then look at the heater plug relay and its associated circuit. Most diesels will start (without the heater plugs) with a bit of ether, even on the coldest day.
