Cheap old german cars, worth the risk?
Lucky old me is about to get my foot operated on and possibly hacked off - nice! And going to have to wear one of those nice big shoes and a pair of crutches - even nicer!
So I am thinking of getting mysen an auto bucket that has to basicaly get me about for 6-8 weeks at which point, I'll either just keep it for a while or sell it and hopefully get most of my cash back.
So seems I only need it for a wee while, I don't wanna spend much £600-800 would be nice, the down side is I am so vain I don't want a mondano, or a Chavalier (vectra whatever they're called these days). It would be nice to have something a) Smooth and b) at least pleasant to drive and c) reliable.
I been looking at quite a few the two that catch my eye are:
Merc 190 2.0L and the 320 Touring (consider hatch), both appear to have quite a few okish examples in this price range. Milleage pretty high on both, but from what I read they're both able to do pretty silly high milage (200kish) esp the merc.
I'm I kidding myself you can get a decent one at this money, or are they likely to be wrecks?
Here is a couple of examples..

That's no mileage at all for a Merc. 190s are built like tanks, and there's plenty around with well over 200k. I had a 190 D with close to 200k, and it was rock solid (and very very slow). I think you'd have to be pretty unlucky to have problems over a few weeks.
I usually buy cars with well over 100k, my scoob is virtually new, at 55k!

Yeah, the mercs are superb, especially the 190E's and E class models in the 1990 -1994 period. Preferably get a petrol fuel injected model, and make sure the gearbox shifts properly. Any problems, feel free to PM me, I'm a Merc mechanic for my sins.

I had an old 325i F reg. Ran like a dream and sold it for more than I bought it for 8 months later
It had 125,000 on the clock when I bought it with full BMW history from new.
