I always thought they looked a little odd when I was a nipper. I did like them coz they were so rare, and a proper rally car for the road, but their very short wheel base reminded of something a kid would draw.
Still, would have one though!

Dialynx make replicas out of 'normal' quattros.....Not sure if Keith's demo car is a real one or a rep, it's very fast which ever it is !. Kim Collins at QST in Haywards Heath has a real Quattro Sport.

One of my favourite cars ever too. Always promised myself one when I was a kid.
Anyone know roughly how much Dialynx charge for a conversion? I know it would will vary but just wondering. Doubt I will be able to find or afford a real one when my time comes!!!

Dialynx are not doing conversions any more. They will build customer cars, but ask Keith @ Dialynx to shorten a normal quattro to a SWB one and he will 99% say no. Too complicated getting/making parts now
You can pick up old converted ones for around 20k and the real ones which haven't been crashed around £50k +. One sold for around this mark recently that had been crashed and Audi put a value of £75k on theirs in a recent autocar test.
Realistically, its not about the money, its actually finding 1 for sale. 214 made, of which only around 176 as customer cars, of which 6 came to the UK officially and of this 1 is hidden away at Audi. The other Sports (non uk models) were imported afater wards. This makes for only around 10 - 15 sports in the UK max. 1 recently badly crashed sitting at Dialynx awaiting serious rebuild if possible!
Nice cars !

I think you will find that a) the modern car will always win as the press want it that way as per a recent topic from Top Gear on this forum
b) I know for fact the sport used was a dog
c) the sport is quoted at 4.5sec with sub 11 sec to 100. In terms of handling, they are not in the modern evo category, but neither is it too far away either
d) haven driven both the evo and the sport, the driver will make all the difference. 306 bhp in a 4wd sport will see most things off, but the same talented driver in the Evo would be marginally quicker in the Evo, but not by much !
Don't forget these cars had to be made for rallying due to rules etc. The road cars share many bits of the rally cars of their time. It cost £55k back in 1985 which in todays terms is around £130k. Each of the sports could be adjusted and it would be interesting to see whether the sport had had recent shocks/suspension check or even replace. 20 years on the original shock will account for a difference as per your comment !

There's a red Sport Quattro that lives near me and has been owend by the same bloke for years. It's fantastic and sounds as good as it looks.
Back in 2001, there was a green one for sale in the UK at £34k. Shoulda bought it. Doh!

Also, lets not forget the Quattro was the mother to all 4wd rally cars. Since it was the first 4wd Rally Car to win the a WRC race in back in '81, then to win constructors championship in '82, every car that has won since, has been 4wd. It began an era that has yet to have passed - Escossie, Subarus, Lancias, etc etc.
One day.....i tell myself......one day.

On the off chance that it hasnt been mentioned; whilst theyre very nice to look at, theyre a pig to drive; the shortened wheelbase makes them as stable as an F16.....

Haven driven them I think you will find thats an urban myth !. They were shortened for rallying to make them more suitable for the twisties and to make it less of a handful
They were twitchy when running at 600bhp+, but in standard 306bhp or 450 in 1st rally configuration they were/are a dream. Slightly prone to understeer but most 4wds running 300 bhp + are probably anyway.

Dialynx built all their cars by taking a std quattro and cutting a portion (300mm?) out from behind the B pillars. Simply put, Audi built the originals by taking everything forward of the B pillars from an 80 sport, and welding a shortened rear portion, with B pillars from a coupe to it, factory approved cut'n'shut style
The reason for this was because 80 had a steeper windscreen which was preferred by the drivers, the shorter doors (all 80s were 4 doors) were a bonus
