Saab 95 2.3 SE - Any good.
Hi peeps,
Basically my dad has had enough of his Saab 9-5 and wants rid. Its an X reg with 120K on the clock, mostly motorway miles and well cared for. He is asking 2.5K for it. So i think there is a bargain to be had.
Firstly, are they any good, as in generally, and how nippy are they when you press the loud pedal because I didnt want to upset him by abusing his car
Whats the general concensus on this ? Its quite luxurious inside but not sure about the image.
Cheers

2.5k is very cheap for an X reg. Believe the 2.3 is 185BHP so will have a decent turn of speed.
If you don't want it, I'll take it off his hands for £2.5k
They are expensive if they go wrong (though I suppose so is a BM / Merc etc), but you should be okay as it has been maintained.
Parts are cheaper than they were (eg. the throttle body used to be £700+, but is now less than £300). You should get around 30mpg unless it is an auto.
See this thread on a Saab board for common problems.
They are very easy to modify if you should wish - £523 for an extra 64BHP
Very comfy on long journeys and very safe (real world safe) if you should have a crash.

One word of warning over the 9-5 ist is definately not as reliable as the previous 9000 model, certainly from speaking to others many early model 9-5's have had turbo's let go. However, its light years away from the 9000 when sitting behind the wheel
The price sounds a bargain though, so go for it, if you are looking for some extra for it, you could also try abbott racing, they certainly did a cracking job on my 9000 aero, tweaking it to 300bhp and 330lb/ft

My 9-5 has been no less reliable than the three 9000's I've had. In fact 2 of those "broke down" due to iffy immobilisers. No such problems in the 9-5 so far (touch wood). I'm on the original turbo at 137,000 miles - I've done 12,000 miles in the last 5 months.
Common expensive problems are a sticky reverse gear (£700 to fix) and sludge in the engine causing big problems (£lots) - though this is preventable with a sump off and clean. Throttle bodies are common failures, though they've come down to £259, from well over £700. Loads having missing pixels on the computer - mine did, but I just bought a new one for about £150.
Main tuners are Speedparts, Abbott Racing and Maptun. Maptun being the most mental (500Hp / 700Nm 9-5 not sure about the multi coloured engine though!!!)
A quick comfy barge which you will get let out at junctions in
