£10,000 diesel - what to get?
Hi all
My S2000 goes tomorrow
Im looking for a diesel, budget is 10 grand(could move a bit for a mega spec car)
Now I fancy an Audi 1.9tdi 130 sport (A3 or A4 ok), 10 grand buys one no probs.
However a mate has offered me a Focus tdci 115ps, 3 door, black zetec, a few options, only 9 months old with 10000 miles so basically near new.
Sounds like not a bad deal, but my concern is depreciation. Which will fair better?? Audi with 50k on clock already or Focus with 10k (Im likely to put 30k on the clock before selling)
Any thoughts or better cars? Has to be diesel I want 50mpg
Andy

Go for the Audi, Focus will drop like a rock.
I had the same choice as you, but saved £1,500 and bought a Seat Ibiza 130 PD TDI Sport.
Had it for six months and haven't regretted it one little bit. I moved from a Clio Cup and was expecting a big dip in performance, but it wasn't to be.
Regards
Jonathan

Skoda Fabia vRS
I bought my 9 month old Fabia vRS for £9750 with 15000 miles. Faster than the cars you mention especially the Focus. Audi is bigger with perhaps better interior, but depends on what you need - I prefer the Fabia. Fabia has the same PD130 engine. Look at the other thread running about 'I sold my Scoob for a vRS' etc

I was about to suggest a Fabia vRS as well, should hold its money as well as the Audi and you'd get a much newer car too.
If its between a Focus or an A4 then you dont need to think too hard do you

I would go for the VAG group car..be it the audi seat or skoda vrs fabia. awesome gti do a package for less than 500 pounds that up the bhp to 170..and masses and masses of torque. just 1 press of a dash mounted button and back to the factory settings and a million mpg

hence i bought a lowly new shape accord which is a more exciting drive (all imho of course). nowhere near the audi in the prestige stakes but is a much better engineered car without the exuberant price tag/running costs. if we're comparing diesels though the ctdi accord is leagues ahead of everything

audi a4
I have just bought an Audi 4 1.9TDI Sport 56k one owner with full Audi s/h and can't recommend it highly enough , the cabin is such a nice place to be , the drive is very relaxing on the motorway , but its quite fun in the twisties with amazing roadholding and feels glued to the road and on top of this I get 650miles to tank ! All this for £10300 from an independant dealer with 6 months warranty. Its a steal IMO , Definatley a step up from a Focus or Golf . Drive the Focus and Audi back to back and there will be no contest

I'm also looking at an oil burner for around £10k and up until now have been favoring the VW 150 Golf as it returns around 55mpg and can be chipped to around 190bhp for £500ish.
Can anybody tell me what sort of mpg the BMWs return (320d or 530d)?

Those figures on your golf are very impressive, what kind of speeds do you drive on the motorways?

You won't believe the difference they make for a couple of hundred quid.

What Lee said -- also Jabba Sport and Revo Teknik's flash upgrades on the 110bhp are not expensive, about £300 gives you 130+bhp and about 230lb-ft -- in other words, you get PD130 power & torque. Lots of happy users on the MkIV Golf and Seat forums
Diesel Car magazine's website has downloadable articles about various upgrades -- Bromley (Tuning Box) and Superchips. OK, they are paid-for "advertorial" but it gives you an idea.
Surprisingly, Superchips is starting getting a good rep for diesel tuning in the VAG circles, lots of good stuff being said about their flash upgrades for the PD motors on the Golf forums.
