I am thinking of buying one and just wondered if there are any thing to look out for or any nasty horror stories etc.
double lined flame suit at the ready, but some serious answers would be appreciated as i cant afford a scoob again.

I've a '94 90bhp Tdi, 180,000 mile station car. It's had a few new tyres, brake pads an an alternator and battery over the last 10 years, but it's still on its original clutch. Handles dangerously but it gives a genuine 50mpg so I'm not complaining (£44 quid gave me 650 miles today!!). One peculiar thing is rust in all the old fashioned places - wheelarches and rear number plate light plinth thingy, but non to threaten an MOT. I doubt there's much cheaper motoring available - go for it.
I think the paint issue may be something to do with water based paints being introduced around '93/4. I think cars from around this time suffered badly with poor paint adhesion. Mine had an under-warranty respray at 3 years old

My buddy has one and it is the Umwelt 75bhp Td not the tdi - so dont get confused the Umwelt is not as fast or as economical as the 90bhp Tdi!
in fact it really is painfully slow, pay the extra and get the Tdi!

thanks guys, most helpful an not a "peez" take in sight...? I have a few more questions to pick your brains with if you would be so kind...
1) are there any alternatives to a mk3 golf ie similar money age reliability ?
2) Does a diesel need any special servicing ?
3) should i be put off a high miller ie over 120thousand -ish miles ?

The 90 / 110bhp Mk3s don't need anything special -- the motor is well reliable. You might want to change the oil every 5-6K but that's it really.
If a high mileage is backed up by a full / good service record I wouldn't worry.

If you want a day to day runabout that will be really reliable and cost c*ck all to run then i cant recommend a 1.9 tdi mk3 enough, admittedly they are slow and the handling is not that great but they are well built and cheap to run.

Best cheap runaround out there.

Try and pick up a 110bhp version if you can, the 90bhp version in the Golf has the old wastegate turbo set up but the 110bhp version has a modern VNT turbo setup so has less lag and pulls from lower down as well as having more power and torque.
Buy a tuning box and the 110bhp version will give around 140bhp and 200lbft.
Not sure on the Mk3 Golf but later versions of the VAG 110TDi came on variable servicing with a service every 2 years or upto 30000miles.
The 90/110TDi engine still holds the record as the most thermally efficient engine fitted to a production road car. 50-60mpg is easy.
Cheers
