My ageing Mother has set her heart on an SLK
I know many of you will say a boxster or s2000 is better but knowing my mum as I have since birth nothing else will do!!!!

So she has around 15-18K to spend and it must be an Auto

which engines are best?
Auto or Tiptronic?
any facelift dates which are a marked improvement?

Any help or advice appreciated

You'll be struggling to find anything much bar the the supercharged 4 cylinder (M111) engine in any SLK, where in usual 2.3 or later option of 2.0 size, which in fairness are all strong engines. There are a few 3.2 V6's around, and even fewer 3.2 V6 AMG versions.
As for gearboxes, at least 75% are automatics which is a good thing because A: the manual box isn't really that nice and B:the auto is probably one of the best in the world. Any "tiptronic" is just the auto with the later gear selector.
There is a facelift, but it isn't really blatently obvious unless you are looking for it.

I used to have a 230k tuned and loved it.

Personally I would go for a SLK320 Auto. Easily get one for that money. Facelift as standard.

Good freind has had a SLK230, and now owns the SLK320, the 320 is a much better car, he paid £16000 for his with 30000mls

We have a black 2001 Y 230K, 30k, fMBsh - serviced last week, tip-tronic, A/C, cruise control, heated 2 tone leather (cream & black) and 17" Merc alloys which is about to come up for sale in the next couple of weeks if this was of interest?
