Cool

The latest according to autoexpress:

it's time to dust off those pointy lapels, dig out the flares and fluff up the bubble perm - because Ford's Capri is making a comeback! The legendary name will return on a new Focus-based coupé, built in the same spirit as the 1969 original. The new car will be available with a wide range of engine and trim choices, from basic four-cylinder models through to a scorching 300bhp V6-engined version.

On sale at the end of 2005, the newcomer is based on the versatile C1 platform, currently being developed by the blue oval. The length of the chassis can be adjusted to suit cars of different sizes and will make its debut in the next-generation Focus, due in 2004. It will also appear with varying wheelbases on the Volvo V30 and V50, plus the next-generation Mondeo.

The Capri, which insiders say will be the production name of the striking coupé, will sit on a platform midway between the Focus and Mondeo, and will be available as a two-door coupé and cabriolet, with a Mercedes SLK-style folding roof. Standard coupé versions will feature a hatchback, while the cabriolet will have a conventional boot. The appearance of a drop-top Capri means a convertible Focus is unlikely, while the car's final styling will be signed off by Pininfarina, which also penned the forthcoming StreetKa.

The car's handling is expected to match its sporty looks. Entry-level models will have a front-wheel-drive set-up, while more upmarket versions will be equipped with permanent four-wheel drive. This will feature an active centre differential, distributing power between front and rear axles. A choice of six-speed manual or semi-automatic transmission will be offered on coupé versions, while the cabrio will also have the option of an automatic gearbox.

Under the bonnet, the entry-level car will come with a modified version of the Focus's 2.0-litre Zetec engine, offering about 130bhp, while the fastest four-cylinder model will use the 168bhp unit from the Focus ST170. All four-cylinder models will have front-wheel drive, while 4WD will be fitted to all V6s. The flagship Capri, which is likely to use the ST300 name, will be powered by a turbo 3.0-litre engine and will produce nearly 300bhp. Ford is also toying with the idea of fitting Volvo's five-cylinder, 2.4-litre units to the range. Two diesel Capris are likely to be offered, with either 150bhp or 170bhp 2.0-litre TDCi powerplants. The company is also keen to price the Capri competitively, which means the entry-level version of the coupé will cost around £15,000, with the cabrio starting from £17,500.

The info is correct, but the picture is waaay off. It looks more like the Mk1 Capri tarted up. Think what they did to the GT40, and your about there. Don't ask me how i know this, cos if i told you, i'd have to kill you...

Ford are not launching a new Capri! This is an old story from a german motor journo who did a piece mixing up three models ford were looking at, and added a comment about the retenion of the Capri name - but I have a extremely good source at Ford who says this is B*llocks!
