Default A4 Quattro's

Anyone got any experience of them?

Are they worth going for over the normal FWD models. Looking into a commute replacement for the Skyline and the A4 is in there.

2.8, 1.8T (chipped would give roughly same power as 2.8 but more torque) and the 2.5TDi..........

Is the quattro worth it and have people drove either back to back etc?

Cheers

Well i had an A6 2.8 Quattro which was a bit of a heavy old barge but really flew once wound up so i imagine the A4 would be quite a bit quicker.

A bit wallowy around bends but grips well although (with an A6 at least you really feel the weight) The added weight of the Quattro coupled with a 2.8 engine made it quite thirsty, certainly more so than a Scoob (like 18mpg)

Dont let me put you off they are good cars but not in a same leaque as a Scoob in terms of acceleration or handling and i do mean no where near!
unless your on an autobahn - then you will p*ss all over them!

By the way you only really notice the Quattro in the wet - in the dry a fwd would feel just as good!

Brought an A4 2.8 Quattro myself a couple of months back as a second car (mainly for the missus to bomb about in, 5 speed tip-tronic, heated leather, Bose sound system, plus it has a factory fitted audi sport body kit and i've added a set of 18" OZ alloys and a set of 30mm lowering springs.

Not so quick 0-60 but it motors well and will sit at 100 at just under 3000 rpm . crap on petrol around town but great on the motorway...

The Quattro system is superb, handles as well as the scoob, shame it doesn't go as quick...

We had a 1.8T A4 (FWD) afew years back, that was pants!

364.5 days a year then in the UK I'd notice a Quattro!

I'm not after anything as fast or handling any more, just a bit a bit of a luxo cruiser for my commute that barely lets me get above 40mph - fecking south east

I've done the Scoob thing, and a Supra TT thing and a R33 GTR thing!!!! No point having any of them anymore for the traffic I sit in

I must say I'd lean to the Quattro over the FWD as I like 4WD, and would probably lean to the 1.8T over the 2.8, but no idea which I'd go for from the 2.5TDi 180 or the 1.8T, both similar bhp when chipped but the diesel has vast amounts more torque but of course the narrower powerband................

Guess I'd have to try a quattro 1.8T and TDi if I go down this route!

I had an Audi 90 quattro awhile back, thats what got me into the whole 4x4 thing.

With FWD I hate sitting at a T-junction in the wet trying to pull out with the wheels just sittng there spinning

Hasn't the Quattro 1.8T got more power than the FWD 1.8T?

I *think* they are both 150bhp Mark, though possibly the newer shaped ones were uprated to 180?!?

It would seem the better option than the 2.8 though I guess, since the chip gives the same-ish bhp and more torque.............

Anyone know what the fuel consump is like on a chipped 1.8T?

Also the 2.5TDi came in two flavours I think, 163bhp and 180bhp. Does anyone know if they made any changes to the engines or is it purely a different map?

There was a late A4 "1.8T Quattro" rather than a "1.8t" with Quattro... if that makes any sense.

IIRC, these had recaro-style seats, light-grey dials, carbon effect interior and 180bhp. I'm pretty sure these were introduced pretty close to the end of the production run of the previous shape A4's to try and attract customers back to the old design before bringing out the all new A4.

Cheers,
Grant

Hey mate. I have one of the 2.0turbo(petrol) A3 sportbacks with DSG now and FWD. The damn traction light is always lit up, makes me miss the S3. Be a little easier on the pedal though it's pretty good, and less drivetrain losses means it's more economical..ie make same progress with less power needed in the FWD car. So quattro S3 vs FWD A3..not a great deal in it. Only had quattro A4 (S4) and was good car, really don't think the quattro is worth a premium though as the car wasn't a sportscar and I don't offroad. Both FWD and AWD will understeer the same..the ones you are looking at don't have enough power to overwhelm the FWD...lots of wafflin but basically just save money and get FWD.
Audi's really nice inside, thats one aspect I've liked of the 3 I've owned..but relatively boring to drive and running costs (main dealer servicing etc) are high compared to the 'poor' relations (Skoda/VW/Seat)

Hey Chuck, cheers for that mate. TBH, for the run I do I guess FWD would be fine, it would just be for the commute (40mph everywhere coz of the cr4p surrey driving abilities they have round here ) mainly after all. As you say though, the Audi's interiors are nice and thats whats leaning me to them, as not after pure speed anymore, just something thats nice to be inside with a bit of poke and a few toys

On the servicing a mates bro-in-law is almost an Audi Master Technician (in last bits of the test!) , so I might be able to wangle something there

thats what I mean I tried fwd cars, and an (FWD) A3 and tbh didn't like them. It had a horrible traction control system.

I have the '99 (b5)A4 1.8T Quattro Sport and I can definitely say its worth having over FWD and if like me you many want to chip it will be able to handle the power better. Plus it has independent multilink front and rear suspension so should handle better, where as the FWD only have a torsion bream rear suspension. The 1.8TQ Sport is also lowered by 25mm from standard. My only mod so far has been a chip by Upsolute, which has allowed me to keep and and even slightly edge away from my brothers CTR in a straight line drag. It has 180bhp as standard, Upsolute chip is quoted at 211bhp.

Have a look on www.audi-sport.net for more info.

Hi Neil

What about a Seat ? I get around 30mpg average from my Leon Cupra R on general motoring and its the same as a VW/Audi anyway, just a different badge

My old man is selling a 53 plate mint Leon Cupra 1.8T (180bhp) with leather at the mo.

LOL! A mate just got rid of a Cupra R, like to be different! I prefer the interior of the Audi mate, hence looking at that, or a newish 3 series I think.......

Cheers tho!

Scott spoke to Rob (the Audi chap) and he's given me a good run down on what the differences are between the 1.8T, 2.8 and 2.5TDi so thats cool.
