I looked at one when they first came out, had a Mercedes E-class at the time. Build quality was shocking compared to the Mercedes - sharp bits on the dashboard etc. From all accounts they're good cars but they look v.dated to me to be honest.

EXPENSIVE!!!
COST!!
MONEY!!
SKINT!!!
They look nice and are a nice car, nice and, well "nice".
My brothers company had a fleet of 2.5 V6 as fleet cars and ended up scrapping it and going to BMW 320i's. All the Jag's cost so much to maintain, many of them into thousands in the first year!!!
Quote from Clarkson "X-type, not really a proper Jag is it".

such utter nonsense here.
we recently bought a 3.0 se and all I can say is that it has been excellent.
it does drink a bit of fuel, but for the brief of cheapest car that is like driving an armchair, I couldn't find anything better.
Enormous boot space (more than the x type), the reliability of the mondeo but with 4wd and lots of nice toys. Couple this to a fantastic looking body for the class and a stylish colour scheme, add in massive depreciation, and you have yourself a great second hand purchase.

I have sold Jaguar for three years now and have to say they don't seem any more or less reliable than the the competition (BMW, Merc, etc) Three year unlimited mileage warranty on a new one which is transferable if you buy one used. Comparing an X Type to a Merc E Class is not a fair comparison, it competes on price with the C Class and I've never noticed any sharp edges on the dashboard ? Some people think Jag has an 'old man' image but as I tell my customers, when Jaguar were busy winning at Le Mans, BMW were building bubblecars and motorbikes,so much for the ultimate driving machine. Buy a used 3.0, save a packet due to depreciation and not much less to the gallon than a 2.5. As an alternative you could buy a Merc instead, after all thousands of German taxi drivers can't be wrong !

Your good experience doesn't detract from the bad experiences of the the people to which I refer. So, hardly "utter nonsense" is it.

Mention an X-Type on here and you'll get the 'it's a Mondeo' comment within moments, but it's not a Mondeo. It shares the same floorplan as the well handling Mondeo, but they are not the same. The interior of the X-type is a much nicer place to be aswell. And how many four wheel drive 3.0 Mondeos are there ?!?
However, I've had two and I'd never have another.
The first one I had was an early 3.0SE Auto with most of the toys, so hardly cheap. The auto box and entire transmission system was complete ****e. It was on it's 3rd gearbox when I changed it, plus it had new driveshafts, diff parts, control box, etc. All four door mechanisms failed on different occasions, I spent a week getting in from the passenger side !!! The boot leaked into the wheel well and Jaguar couldn't fix this after 5 attempts. The car averaged a visit to the dealership every month, and I had it 18 months or so.
It was a nice car, but the early auto's had problems with the 4x4 setup. All costs were met by warranty but that's not the point.
In the end, they did a deal for me on a slightly newer 3.0SE X-type Auto and I started to get transmission problems again so I sold it.
The car went very well, handled well, was admired by many, had a really nice interior and I really wanted it to be a great car - but it wasn't.
I can't comment on manuals, but I would avoid the early auto 2.5 and 3.0s (ie 4x4).
All the best

I meant the S-type, hands quicker than brain again, apologies!
utter nonsense was in reference to the mondeo being a fair comparison and the sharp edges on the dash board.
Nothing to do with your friends having bad experiences, I am not calling you a liar!
I would like these sharp edges pointed out, as jaguars have to go through the same safety checks as every other car that is type approved. Sharp interior edges would usually constitute a failure.
I get annoyed with people slating a car based on what their mate down the pub said. Fair play to anyone with first and experience of them, but to say the car is that bad is simply rubbish.
There are lemons in every model of car you can buy, it doesn't mean the entire car as a whole is crap.

I used to work in a Jaguar main dealer,as a technician, when the X type first reared its head...
How long do i have to tell you what kinda car these are????
Unless you fancy the bird on reception at your local Jag dealers, and you have VVV deep pockets...steer clear my friend..There a bit Poo to put it mildly..Autoboxes,failing whenever they please, manuals better..expect £1500 to £2000 for a clutch tho...MD price of course..
Some of the new Mercs are riddled with probs and electrical gremlins..
Buy an E39 BMW..Pretty good all round..IMHO

Sounds like I was lucky then. I had one of the first 2.5 sport manuals, had for 3 1/2 years. Had a few problems but nothing serious, cooling pipes popped off twice, abs unit went and christmas tree lights a few times.
Lost 55% of value which is better than a BMW or Mercedes.
Was considering another they are on a deal £229+Vat a month for 18 months
