New Golf GTI or R32

New Golf GTI or R32
I am seriously considering swapping my MY04 STI for a new Golf GTI or wait for the new R32 next year. Has anyone driven a new GTI yet? Jeremy Clarkson rated it very highly on top gear.

Hello mate, not driven an R32, but...........I have driven a new Golf GTi, on a decent test drive (alone), and I, personally didn`t rate it. (Maybe that`s why Jezza Clarkson`s a miilionaire, and I`m not )
Anyway, quick review:
Interior and exterior, personal to each of us, and you`ll know if it`s for you, BUT..........I really liked the leather seats, and hated some of the plastics. IMHO, the interior no longer has the quality feel of the Mk 4.
Power - not bad, but no cigar ! Felt torquey (but then my last car was a Civic Type R, so it would), but not enough "bite" to it. Your STi will demolish it.
Handling/suspension - a reasonable comfort/performance blend, erring on the side of comfort. It did, in fact, feel a bit too soft for me personally, and was definitely not as composed as my benchmark at that time, my CTR.
Anyway, I returned from my test/drive feeling "underwhelmed", although I am well-aware that a test drive is not the same as owning the thing.
My final point: A few days later, I test-drove my first WRX over similar roads, and promptly ordered one ! IMO my standard (new) WRX will outperform a new GTi everywhere. The handling is far more composed, and the power delivery is in a different league. Suffice it to say, I love the Scoob.
Having considered the fact that your STi will probably waste my WRX, I think you will be very disappointed with the new GTi.
Just my tuppeny`s worth, and I hope it helps.

Neither, wait for the new R34, out later this year. 3.4 litre 265bhp (approx) 4WD.
Only problem, is that they will probably charge far too much for it.

There was a good US comparison between the 2.5 WRX STi, EVO and R32 on the VWVortex site...
Follow this link for the review (it's quite long...)

My mate had an R32 and now has the GTi.
He prefers the GTi. He really liked the R32 but the fuel consumption was shocking which I found an interesting comment as he has had quite a few BMW six cylinder engined cars 328i's and 330i's and never mentioned bad fuel consumption with those cars.

I would deffo get the R32 if I could but I have just picked up a 2002 V6 Golf It has been on the rolling road and produced 224bhp also has the 4 wheel drive.
I am selling the scoob to make way for this. And yes it does sound fantastic. Also raced a Gti in it . . . . . . . . what Gti ???

The new Golf GTI posted a 0-60 in around 6.5 secs and 0-100 in about 16 and a bit seconds in Autocars 0-100-0 test recently, which is pretty impressive for a FWD, comparible to a R32, what would it be like once chipped!

A3 3.2 is much nicer than the Golf R32. Discounts to be had too.
The Integra is 400kg lighter than a Golf Gti so I doubt it would need "light mods" to beat it, not the same market though as previous poster said. I've gone ITR to ATR to A3 3.2.

If you buy the R32 at a good price it will hold it,s value better than a new GTI.
I have a Mk4 GTI 150PDI Diesel and although it was built for mile eating, it bottoms out on anthing other than smooth tarmac.
The R32 has more focussed suspension and more Kudos IMHO.
Compared to the scooby tho, the Golf is streets ahead in build quality.
But I know which set of keys I reach for when there's some real driving to be done
Roblad.
