AUDI RS2
Just saw an RS2 on the trader website, with 61,000 miles for nearly £19,000. I know they are collectable and usable, but for a few more grand you can now get the phenominal RS4.

The RS2 had 315bhp standard, and was partly developed by Porsche. I'd imagine it'd be a mare to maintain, being so unique! AFAICR only 180 (ish) RHD models were ever made for the UK, hence the high price, 2nd hand.
There are quite a few LHD ones around, for about 12-18k though. Used to hold the record for fastest 0-30mph. I'd love one, but the servicing frightens me off!

That RS2 is pricey cos it's rarity. Regular, "good" ones are 12k or so.
You don't get a decent RS4 this side of 30k

Thebigmans right, you won't get a decent RS4 of less than 30K. If you do, it will be very high mileage. Remember though, that yes the RS2 was developed with the help of Porsche, but the RS4's engine was tweeked by Cosworth. One major thing to bear in mind with the RS4 is that the suspension was that stiff, they used softer alloy for the wheels, thus incurred many owners bending wheels, which Audi would not replace. You also can't stick on aftermarket alloys, as this invalidates the warranty, as the suspension can't cope. I might be wrong about Audi not replacing the alloys, but I read somewhere that this was the case, especially now if your not the original owner.

I had an RS2. Fantastic car.... very quick with 400NM of torque as standard.
They are very reliable, so if you find a good one it won't bankrupt you.
2200 of them made in total, all of them built on the Porsche 959 line at Porsche, all of them with Porsche build numbers. Engines started life as a 2.2 20V 5cyl Audi S2 engine with a 6 speed uprated gearbox, quattro torsen diff - shipped to Porsche where they got a new intercooler, turbo, inlet manifold, ECU programming, hotter exhaust cam, free flowing sports exhaust with twin sports metallic cats etc raising power to 315HP 400NM. The cars were also fitted with Porsche ABS, Porsche 4POT brakes (with the factory option of the 993 Twin Turbo stoppers), Porsche 17'' alloys, Bespoke electric Recaro seats, Speed Limiter removed and painted in Porsche colours. They also had bespoke front and rear bumpers and painted side skirts (for air management). They can hit 0-62 in 4.8 secs, nudge 165mph, and do the quarter mile in 13 secs as standard. They were built between 1994 and 1996 and were quite probably the fastest estate car of the 1990s. The also ran on Dunlop SP8000s which were specially developed for the speed and loads the 1600KG car could produce.

Piccies of my old one :

The wheel issue on the "old RS4" was eventually sorted by Audi replacing the wheels with a harder type once only or Audi would keep replacing the soft ones if a claim was proven ie not kerbed, also the soft wheels were designed to deform rather than the suspension buckling...the ride on the RS4 is deffo not hard as most owners upgrade.
The new RS4 is £49,995 on the road and probably another 5k for the Avant when it appears which most people will want.

I remember reading an article on the RS2 where the tester couldn't get the 4.8 time to 60, so he called Audi to ask them if they were being truthful... Audi told him to dump the clutch high on the revs, as the car would take it okay... he did, and scared himself to death!
The only downside to them now is the interiors, though they're probably still nicer than a Scooby's

I remember trying it in Venlo at the lights after a ring trip, our friends were in a hopped up 270hp Hirsch Tuned Saab. We were just playing, reving the cars a little bit.. not really intending to race when the traffic lights changed.. and then I thought.. hey why not try this 6000RPM launch technique Audi told Performance Car to do back in the day.
So anticipating the lights, I reved and held at 6000 rpm (they rev to 7200) for a sec or two.. the lights changed and I side stepped the clutch. There was a chirp as four 225, 45 zr 17 Michelin Pilots looked for some grip and then a clunk from the diff and woosh... I could hardly pull second gear quick enough (0-30 in a McLaren F1 beating 1.5 secs).
It will stick with me as one of those mind re-arrangingly stupidly mad automotive things that you remember.... like being airborne most of the time on a 'ring lap with a mad nutter named Guido in a barely road legal Porsche 993 Supercup racer.
These days, the performance of these things in a Subaru WRX STi world are probably not impressive... but still they are a stonkingly good piece of automotive history.
