Stupid MPG !
My other car is a 1998 2.0 16v Ibiza Cupra Sport. Fairly standard other than a Superchip and green panel filter.
I've owned it from new, ran it in carefully, and it is well looked after. Have a look at what average mpg I'm getting!
(9.9 gallon/45 litre tank).
Admittedly I have been driving it steady recently, but not bad I'm sure you will agree.

Er, thats more than a diesel, why not set the trip meter, brim it, run it to empty and divide the ammount in gallons into the miles you have registered for an accurate measure of mpg, having said that, even if its quite a way out it will still be doing very well. I suppose they are quite small and have a reasonable sized engine to move what weight there is.
My Saab 9-3 registers 30/31 on the computer for my commute but its actually about 2mpg over, i.e late twenties mpg.

I couldn't believe it myself so did it last time and it does overread by 2 mpg.
Might start to strip some weight out and fold the mirrors in to see what its really capable of...
In fairness, I think it's the warm weather thats helping, as it doesn't take as long to warm up!
