The 996 is a great everyday car, power, speed, handling, responsiveness, and reliability. You will read the odd "horror" story of RMS failure - Rear Main Seal, the seal between the engine and the gearbox. This is one thing to look out for when buying a used 996 (look for oil on the ground, or oil around the join in this area). It's not nearly as bad as many people would have you believe.
The main expenses were the tyres (rears over £200 each) and servicing (thankfully only every 12k miles).

My neighbour has had 2x 996. His last one was a C4, and the engine blew (just after me telling him it didnt sound right). Then he purchased a 996 C4s and has experienced the switches falling out of the dash and the gear conecting rod snapping (or similar). Both dealer purchased and serviced with no expense spared. Old driver, no track days or anything like that.
I think its widely accepted that last of the well built 911s were the 993s. The prices for 993s have remained quite static also while 996s have been droppng quite steadily.

I have ONE car only and it is a factory uprated 993 Twin Turbo. Have had it and driven it every day for over a year now. It starts, it stops, is completely reliable and is "play station fast" in every gear. Build quality is great (but obviously dated dash) and only downside is fuel economy which the computer tells me is around 14mpg. Couple of photos attached. It is my 5th 911 over the years

I have been driving '99 C2 996 3.4 since Jan this year - went from MY02 WRX - its a complete hoot and I love it
Running costs are interesting - yes the tyres are approx 200pounds a pop on the rears but the fuel really good - miles (and I mean miles better thant std UK WRX) better - yeah ok its a 65 litre tank in the 996 - but I actually got 400 miles out of 59 litres the other day.
The early 996's are tend to engine problems so make sure you get a latter on (or one with a replaced engine (like mine )
Would I habve an other - yep
Would I have a C2 - nope
C4S or Turbo next

What engine problems Trumble, are the varioram cars more reliable and really worth that much extra?
I keep mulling over buying a LHD UK registered 911 of around the M or N plate age.
Then again perhaps I'll wait until I can commit enough funds and cut out the middle man and go straight to a 996 Turbo.

996 Turbo is one of the best road cars on the planet. I couldn't bring myself to own one as a road car though cos of all the other numpties on the road with attitude problems against such cars. Not to mention the tesco car park "basket on bonnet" and "trolley on an incline" club who seem to be forever dinking the panels!!! I definately do NOT want ot be one of those fools that parks over 2 spaces - though I can understand why they do.
Can't beat a big, comfy mile munching car for the road and a hardcore motor for the track. Cue, 993 RS......Yum.
I will own a 911 within 3 years. Probably a LHD 993 C2 as better variants are out of my price range. I'll have to stick to passenger laps at the 'ring then go for a quick tug in the toilets.

I owned one for two years, and if you don't need family car practicality I believe the 996 is one of the best all round drivers cars ever made. They're just as useable every day as they are driving 500 miles across Europe as they are going out for a quick thrash. I'd be hesitant to keep one out of warranty due to previously mentioned problems with engines and RMS, but porsche will warranty the car for 725/year and that includes EU breakdown cover.
Talk of negative sentiment towards porsche drivers is over played. I wasn't totally daft where I parked it, but regularly left mine in sainsburys car park, in multi-stories and it never picked up a scratch. Can't remember ever being called a w4nker whilst driving it either!
Gary.

The RMS was never fixed, as it was traded in for a 996 Turbo a few weeks after that.
One thing you'll notice about the bodywork on a 996 - it's made of proper steel, and the paint is more than one micron thick! Tap a door panel and compare to a scooby! It would take quite a knock to dent a 996.

NL - the early 996's from 98/99/00 had a fault (cant remember where) that caused the odd cylinder to crack.
Evidently it was fixed with the late 3.4's (3.6's dont have the problem). Mine had the engine swapped at 48k (i'm up to 53k now and it is really sweeet).

Oh here i go again, the porche hater, i drive a 996 turbo (not everyday) the fookin thing's not reliable enough, it's been to and throw the dealer's like a bloody yo yo. The engine warning light come's on all the time, bit's fall of it regulary, the remote locking dos'nt alway's work, and when it do's, you can't get the bloody thing open again without setting the alarm of, iv'e had interior water leak's, and when it is working it eat's rear tyre's (but that's only to be expected really), but hey what do you expect for a porche approved used car at £75k, i mean you get what you pay for! Should of bought a 360 modena, that are so unreliable. But when it's working properly there's no other car i'd rather have, well ok maybe a gallardo then.

Drive a 996 Turbo everyday. 1 year in & no problems at all. My wifes vauxhall Zafira has cost more to run over the last year (excluding petrol costs !)
Try finding any other supercar that can be driven everyday, putting around £12-15k miles on it every year & not having any major issues or major running costs.....there isn't one.
